    Two Polish policemen have returned to the streets of Harlow for their second day on the beat with local officers.

    They are expected to spend a few days in the town following the fatal attack on Polish worker Arkadiusz Jozwik last month to help reassure the community.

    Ch Insp Alan Ray, district commander at Harlow police station, hopes their presence will help to "break down barriers".

    "It’s something we’ve done before up in Colchester… where we brought officers in from Saudi Arabia," he said.

    "We hope it’s something that over the next week will make a difference to the community."

  2. China to 'soon' submit Bradwell design planspublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 15 September 2016

    China General Nuclear Power Corp, external (CGN) will submit a design proposal for the nuclear reactor it wants to build in Bradwell to British authorities "pretty soon", a source has told the Reuters news agency.

    As we've been reporting, the British government has given the green light for French utility firm EDF, external to build a new nuclear plant at Hinkley Point in Somerset, with an $8bn (£6bn) investment from CGN. 

    "They can now invest in Hinkley and proceed with the development of Bradwell, the first act of which will be to formally submit the design of the reactor and the station to the UK nuclear regulatory process so they can get design approval for it," the source said.

    Asked about the timing around the submission, the source replied: "It will be pretty soon." 

    The nuclear power plant at Bradwell (pictured below when the first reactor opened in 1962) stopped generating electricity in 2002.

  5. China says it will 'move forward' with nuclear plants on East Anglian coastpublished at 11:38 British Summer Time 15 September 2016

    The Chinese General Nuclear Corporation (CNG) has issued a statement welcoming the decision to proceed with Hinkley Point, and confirming its commitment to building new nuclear reactors in Essex and Suffolk (existing Sizewell C pictured).

    It says: "We are now able to move forward and deliver much needed nuclear capacity at Hinkley Point, Sizewell and Bradwell with our strategic partners, EDF, and provide the UK with safe, reliable and sustainable low-carbon energy."

  7. Gardiner: Questions to be answered over Bradwell planpublished at 11:03 British Summer Time 15 September 2016

    The shadow energy minister Barry Gardiner says there are "real questions" over plans to build a new nuclear power station at Bradwell in Essex after the government has given approval for Hinkley Point C in Somerset.

    New conditions have been put on a deal struck with French and Chinese investors. 

    The Chinese state-backed firm, CGN, is pressing to build other new nuclear power stations in the UK including in Essex, but Mr Gardiner said he is concerned about the possibility of Chinese workers building the plant.

    "I think it would be a tragedy if we lost the skills base in this country by enabling the Chinese to come in and take Bradwell as a project that was primarily for their own labour force," he said.

    China General Nuclear Power Corporation, external (CGN) is to release a statement shortly welcoming the British government's decision for the go-ahead on Hinkley Point in Somerset.

    Sources have told the BBC that the British ambassador in Beijing explained the terms and conditions of the agreement to the head of the Chinese National Energy Administration overnight. 

    The Chinese are understood to be happy with the deal, and will proceed at Hinkley Point and, crucially, now press ahead with submitting the design for a nuclear power station at Bradwell to planners.

    China is also understood to be happy with the government's proposed special share that it will hold in all future nuclear projects, including the proposed station in Essex. 

    UK government sources have stressed Bradwell will have to go through the new regulatory process. 

    The existing nuclear power plant on the Blackwater Estuary (pictured) stopped operating in 2002 and is being decommissioned.

  9. Hospital trust in Philippines to recruit nursespublished at 09:46 British Summer Time 15 September 2016

    A team from Southend Hospital is out in the Philippines trying to recruit more nurses. 

    The Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, external says it has a shortage of staff and wants to recruit about 40 nurses to start working early next year.

    Tony Durcan is from the Essex branch of the Royal College of Nursing, external union: "There is an initial expense because we are sending senior managers out there to recruit, but the important thing is these people come in and their skills are very good, their culture is very good and very similar to the NHS.

    "Because they're going to be on a work permit... we can actually invest in them and make the difference that we want to for our patients."

    Approval for the project, at Hinkley Point in Somerset, was postponed by Theresa May when she became Prime Minister two months ago while a review was carried out. 

    The French-owned energy firm EDF will now lead a consortium to develop the plant, but there will be new conditions attached. 

    These conditions means the government, external will also be able to take a special share in all future nuclear projects which will ensure that significant stakes cannot be sold without its knowledge or consent.   

    The Chinese state-backed firm CGN, which is one of the three major investors in Hinkley Point along with EDF and the UK government, is hoping to build other new plants at Bradwell in Essex and Sizewell in Suffolk.

    Two policemen from Poland have started patrolling with local officers in Harlow in the wake of the fatal attack of Polish worker Arkadiusz Jozwik last month.

    It comes after Polish police chiefs met Essex Police, external chief constable Stephen Kavanagh last Tuesday to raise concerns over hate crime. 

    T, externalhe force has said second lieutenant Bartosz Czernicki and chief sergeant Dariusz Tyburathey would offer the community reassurance and were due to stay for a few days.

    During their first patrol they stopped to look at the floral tributes left to Mr Jozwik at The Stow shopping precinct where he was assaulted.

    Police have released CCTV images of raiders, external who fled with a five-figure sum after a violent early-morning robbery at a post office in Brentwood earlier this summer.

    Two thieves laid in wait for staff to arrive at McColl's post office and shop in Ongar Road at 05:45 on 28 July before forcing one of them to open the safe.

    Police said the victim suffered injuries to his face and had to to be taken to hospital. The raiders made off through the back door with the cash on to Doddinghurst Road and are thought to have fled in a car.

    One suspect has been described as white, aged between 30 and 40 and about 5ft 8in (1.7m) tall. He wore a black baseball cap, dark-coloured trousers and a hooded top.

    The other man was black, between 25 and 35 and about 6ft 1in (1.9m) tall. He was in dark trousers or jeans and a pale blue and navy jacket. He also wore distinctive orange gloves printed with the words Traffi Glove.
