    Colchester's Jonathan Broom-Edwards said he was "amazed" to win a silver medal in the T44 high jump at the Rio Paralympics.

    He said: ‘It’s been such a new experience, words can’t really describe it."

    The 28-year-old Essex man reached 2.10m and it took a new world record of 2.19m from Poland's Maciej Lepiato to beat him.

    Essex need six points to guarantee promotion to cricket's County Championship Division One.

    Glamorgan's 18-year-old Kiran Carlson will resume on 101 at Chelmsford after the visitors reached 256-7 on the opening day.

    • Colchester's Jonathan Broom-Edwards finished second in the T44 high jump final to claim silver at the Paralympics in Rio.
    • Essex's cricketers have edged two points closer to promotion after day one of their County Championship Division Two against Glamorgan at Chelmsford yesterday.
    • An injury-time equaliser for Chelmsford City kept their unbeaten record intact in the National League South last night. They drew 2-2 against East Thurrock at Melbourne Park.

    There is still slow-moving traffic after a serious road crash on the A12 near Brentwood.

    As we told you earlier today, a lorry collided with a van, and then hit a tree. 

    The northbound carriageway was closed for several hours while Essex Police investigated. 

    A man was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital.

    We've got spells of evening sunshine to look forward to, followed by a dry and very warm night with some mist and fog patches forming in places.

    Temperatures will fall to around 15C (59F).

    Tuesday will be a day of sunshine, and variable amounts of cloud. The top temperature inland will be around 29C (84F), but cooler and less humid on the coast.

  12. Fundraising appeal for abandoned chihuahuaspublished at 17:19 British Summer Time 12 September 2016

    A fundraising appeal has been launched to raise money to help two abandoned chihuahuas.

    One of the dogs is almost completely blind and the other may need a prosthetic limb. They were found cowering by the side of the A127 in Basildon. 

    The pair, three-year-old Peggy and six-week-old Pip Squeak, are in the care of the RSPCA but need extensive surgery to make a full recovery. 

    The animal charity is now appealing for donations towards their care. 

    Dog co-ordinator Kathy Butler said: "We will need to fundraise for this lovely pair while they recover so we're appealing to anyone who can help us to make a donation or perhaps even arrange a little fundraising event of their own."

    It's tea at Chelmsford, and opponents Glamorgan are 185/7. Graham Napier was the pick of the bowlers for Essex, with figures of 4/46 from 14 overs.

    A Southend United footballer has been released from prison.

    Ryan Inniss, who is on loan from Crystal Palace, was jailed for 14 weeks last Wednesday after he admitted smashing a bottle over a night-clubber's head during a brawl.

    Croydon Crown Court today suspended the sentence for 18 months.

    The 21-year-old centre-back, from Beckenham, is yet to make an appearance for The Blues.

  16. Hospital's chief executive believes NHS 'in need of urgent reform'published at 15:56 British Summer Time 12 September 2016

    The boss of Colchester Hospital says the NHS is in urgent need of reform, as a national group warns of "pockets of meltdown" in hospitals this winter.

    The Society for Acute Medicine says the resilience of medical units is being tested like never before, and that discharging delays were spiraling at a disastrous level.

    Colchester Hospital boss Nick Hulme said: "The NHS was designed in 1948 when the life expectancy was some 20 years less than it currently is."

    He said the service needed to make sure it was "investing in the right areas to take pressure off hospitals".

  17. A12 crash: Traffic still very slow through areapublished at 15:32 British Summer Time 12 September 2016

    Earlier today we were telling you about a crash which closed the A12 between the Brook Street roundabout and Mountnessing. 

    We've had an update from our travel news, which says the road is still partially blocked northbound because of recovery work.

  18. ... and some less good news at the Paralympicspublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 12 September 2016

    There's been disappointment for Harlow's Richard Chiassaro in the T54 400m this afternoon - he's finished in fourth place, missing out on a medal.

    Chiassaro, in his first major international final, was just off the pace but the gold was won by Kenny van Weeghel, one of the most experienced athletes out there.  

    David Weir, a four time gold medal winner at the London 2012 games, finished in fifth place.

  19. Some good news at the cricket...published at 14:35 British Summer Time 12 September 2016

    Essex started the day needing six points for promotion to Division One, and now they only need five after reducing Glamorgan to 57 for 5 at lunch.
