    A Braintree teenager who was jailed for 30 months over a drunken late-night tube rampage has had her sentence cut to 24 months by senior judges. 

    Terrie Mann, 19, was in a group of women when trouble broke out on the District Line at Ealing Broadway when they were travelling to a late-night party, London's Appeal Court, external heard. 

    She was jailed at Blackfriars Crown Court in August after admitting assault by beating, causing actual bodily harm and affray. 

    Sarah McCarthy, 23, and Roxanne Brookes, 28, who were with her received 12-month terms after they admitted affray and an appeal against these sentences was refused. 

    The judges were told Mann was of previous good character and had been battling hard to overcome a drink problem. 

    At the time of the train brawl she was consuming over a litre of whisky every day.

    A husband has taken to the streets of Brentwood as a busker for the first time and raised more than £200 for the hospice where his wife is being treated for breast cancer.

    Skip Atkins, who used to play in bands in his youth, said his wife Jan's condition, which returned in 2015, was not curable but could be treated. 

    She used to come to St Francis's Hospice, external in Havering-atte-Bower, Romford, as a day patient but as she became more ill she was admitted because she needed particular attention and help with eating as vomiting was her main problem.

    The family (pictured, including offspring Zoe and Chay), originally from Upminster, are looking for a solution that will enable Jan to come home again. She will see her consultant next week about the latest scan and there may be a formulated plan for chemo, Skip said.

    A 46-year-old woman has been fined £65 with £200 costs and a £20 surcharge for failing to keep her cockerels quiet. 

    Sarah Gourlay, who lives at Mile End in Colchester, failed to comply with a noise abatement order and was sentenced at the town's magistrates' court.

    She ignored repeated requests by neighbours and environment officers to stop cockerels crowing in her garden, the borough council said. 

    In spite of the council contacting Ms Gourlay on a number of occasions, by letter and by phone, neighbours continued to be affected by the noise nuisance, magistrates were told. 

    After a site visit by an environmental protection officer, in October 2015, Ms Gourlay was served with a Noise Abatement Notice. 

    Prosecution was brought about by further complaints in March 2016, with neighbours describing high-pitched crowing, starting as early as 05:15 and lasting up to 25 minutes and continuing on and off throughout the day.

    The bill to replace two sycamore trees in Harwich attacked and destroyed by vandals in "a mindless act" will amount to more than £500.

    The 15-year-old trees, in Harbour Crescent, died after their trunks were drilled and an unknown substance poured into them. 

    Michael Talbot, Tendring councillor responsible for the environment, said he was appalled when he heard what had happened and was at a loss to know why anyone would want to do it. 

    "It is mindless vandalism pure and simple," he said. "If anyone knows who is responsible I would urge them to contact the police."

  9. New appeal for witness pictures over failed cash machine raid in Coggeshallpublished at 15:47 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    Police have appealed for pictures or footage of an attempted theft of a cash machine in Coggeshall at about 03:10 on Sunday, 2 October.

    In the raid at McColls in Church Street a blue Landrover and a silver Jeep were used to ram the machine built into the shop wall. 

    People in balaclavas were seen to use chains to pull the cash machine from the wall and it was left in the road after police disturbed them. 

    Both vehicles were chased towards Tiptree, but they went off road into fields. An extensive search for the suspects was conducted, but no trace was found. 

    Dc Nick Phillips, said: "Any footage or photographs of this incident could be crucial to this investigation."

    The band, who are from Manningtree/Ipswich, have received support from BBC Introducing, played the Latitude Festival in 2015 and the last Reading/Leeds Festivals.

    Drummer Ben Ward said: "We're very excited to be travelling to the USA as a band for the first time. It's a land of treats, gold and opulence - we can't wait to be part of that."

    South by Southwest, which takes place at various venues around Austin, has become one of the key festivals on the global music calendar - providing blogs and hipsters with fresh acts to hype.

    "It's an honour to be asked to perform at SXSW," Ward added. "It is one of the world's leading music festivals, especially for breaking acts."

  11. High school to expand to meet growing population in Loughton areapublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    Work to expand West Hatch High School, external in Chigwell from 1,050 pupils to 1,350 pupils will start next September and it's expected to take a year to complete.

    Essex County Council, external's projections show there is likely to be a significant increase in the demand for secondary school places in the Loughton area from 2018/19. 

    The creation of 60 new Year 7 places at West Hatch from 2018, together with plans to expand Roding Valley High School by 30 Year 7 places would help meet that demand. 

    The West Hatch project would include the construction of a new sports hall and additional teaching spaces, but exact details are yet to be confirmed.

    The council does not want to reveal the estimated cost of the project ahead of the contract-tendering process.

    Three people were found by police on Wednesday afternoon in the back of a lorry on the A282 on the Essex side of the Dartford Crossing.

    Two teenage boys and a man aged in his 20s were checked over at the scene by the ambulance service after which they were arrested on suspicion of entering the UK illegally and passed to Border Force officials. 

    Two of the group were from Iraq and one from Iran. The two who claimed to be minors were referred to social services to have their ages assessed. The third remains in custody and is due to be interviewed by immigration officials. 

    "Where someone is found to have no right to remain in the UK, we will take action to remove them," A Border Force spokesman said.

  15. Coroner to decide to include prison decision in full inquest for electrocuted manpublished at 13:05 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    An inquest will be held next year into the death of a man who electrocuted himself at Chelmsford Prison.

    Dean Saunders, 25, from Basildon, was in custody charged with attacking members of his own family. 

    He was found dead in his cell in January.

    His family claims he was mentally ill and shouldn't have been in prison. 

    A pre-inquest hearing is taking place and the coroner is deciding whether the decision to send him to jail, rather than hospital, should feature in the full hearing scheduled for January 2017.

    Post-mortem examinations are due to take place today on the bodies of an elderly couple found dead at their home near Southend.

    Police were called to an address in Leigh-on-Sea on Tuesday evening. 

    The deaths are currently being treated as unexplained and investigations are continuing.

    The first officer on a light aircraft who died along with the pilot in a crash in Chigwell last year was unable to take the controls over in time to avoid the tragedy, a report concludes.

    A report by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, external found that although it could not be stated "unequivocally" that Captain Robert Bull, 40, of Hornchurch, Essex, became incapacitated, "on the balance of probabilities" it is "likely" that he lost control of the aircraft due to medical reasons. 

    First Officer Francis Simmonds, 46, from Luton, Bedfordshire (pictured) was unable to take over and recover the aircraft in time to avoid it crashing into trees at the edge of a field.
