The Environment Agency say it's now rescued more than 10,000 fish from the River Stour in Sudbury on the Essex/Suffolk border.

But the problems we reported earlier, with the jammed control gate, have not been resolved, and a spokesman says they're expecting divers on site on Monday to help.

A man who brutally attacked his dog on a train carriage in Essex is jailed.

Having turned professional just a year earlier, Chigwell's Ronnie O'Sullivan won his first major ranking title in the 1993 UK Championships. 

Now 23 years and 27 titles later, he's the favourite to win again at the York Barbican in 2016.

An Essex conman who defrauded Premier League footballers out of thousands of pounds has been jailed for four years.

Stephen Ackerman targeted West Ham players and staff including then manager Sam Allardyce and England striker Andy Carroll.

The 48-year-old, of Loughton, was found guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court of 18 counts of fraud totalling more than £61,000 in October.

Judge David Radford said Ackerman was "utterly deceitful and dishonest".

A 77-year-old man had to be taken to hospital after being pushed to the ground and robbed on the streets of Harlow yesterday evening, police say.

The victim was walking along a cycle path in Willowfield at about 18:30 when he was approached from behind by a teenager. 

The suspect took the elderly man's wallet containing £15 and bank cards before running off. 

A woman has fought off an attacker who tried to drag her into woods in Chelmsford last night, police say.

The 39-year-old victim was in Bunny Walks when a man, who is thought to have been carrying a knife, punched her in the face. 

After a further altercation, the woman was able to run off.

Police have now arrested a 38-year-old man in connection with the incident and he is currently in custody. 

The force says it has also increased patrols in the area.

Down in Southend, the Kent Elms footbridge, which passes over the infamous A127, is being removed over the weekend to make way for planned roadworks. 

The junction will be closed between 19:00 and 07:30 tonight and Saturday, with Sunday night facing possible closure if needed. 

A man whose dog died days after he beat and threw the animal around a train carriage is jailed.

The British Transport Police has released a photograph of Kieran Milledge, 22, who today was jailed for beating his dog on a Greater Anglia train between Braintree and Witham last month. 

The force thanked the public and media for their support after a CCTV appeal earlier this week was shared widely online. 

The dog, a Staffordshire bull terrier called Ronnie, died three days after the incident on 10 October.

Before you join millions of others splashing the cash on Black Friday, an Essex money-saving blogger is, as you'd expect, urging caution.

Jordon Cox, external, from Shenfield, said shoppers should only make a purchase if they were already planning on buying something.

"If you just buy things for the sake of it then you're not going to save money, and you're just giving more money away to the brands which is their job, to get you to spend," Jordon told BBC Essex.

Another revelation for Danny Dyer, who featured in the latest episode of the BBC's genealogy show Who Do You Think You Are was that through his Suffolk connections, he's also related to Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII's right-hand man, who was played by Mark Rylance in the BBC drama Wolf Hall (pictured).

His 12-times great-grandmother, Catherine Cromwell, wife of Lionel Tollemache, was Thomas Cromwell's great grand-daughter.

The programme ultimately traces Danny's bloodline back to an English king.... and we'd recommend watching it to find out which one!

Speaking outside Chelmsford Magistrates Court, Det Sgt Steve Maguire from the British Transport Police responded to the sentencing of Kieran Milledge, whose dog died three days after he beat and threw it around a train carriage in Essex.

In total, Kieran Milledge has been jailed for eight months, after he was also found to be in breach of a community order after being caught in possession of a knife for a second strike.

This will be served concurrently with the 21-week sentence handed out earlier to the 22-year-old for animal cruelty. 

He also admitted the second charge of possessing an offensive weapon at today's hearing.

Kieran Milledge, who kicked, punched and beat his dog on a train, is sentenced to 21 weeks in jail for animal cruelty.
