    West Ham legend Peter Brabrook has died at the age of 79, the club has confirmed. 

    The 1964 FA Cup winner and England international, who lived in Basildon, passed away following a short illness on Saturday. 

    The club said it had been left deeply saddened, external at the passing of a "friendly, approachable and hugely knowledgeable figure".

    A jury is continuing to consider its verdict in the trial of a man accused of murdering his wife in Theydon Bois.

    Darren Byrne, 40, denies killing Maria Byrne, 35, at their home in Morgan Crescent in February. 

    The trial has been ongoing at Chelmsford Crown Court, and we'll let you know the verdict as soon as we get a result.

    England's most capped footballer, legendary goalkeeper Peter Shilton, tied the knot on Mersea Island at the weekend.

    The 67-year-old announced his engagement to jazz singer Steph Hayward last year. 

    A number of celebrities including Coronation Street actor Bill Roache and MasterChef's Greg Wallace were pictured at Saturday's wedding.

    The keeper, who has 125 caps for his country, has also become something of a connoisseur of oysters since moving to Essex - featuring on BBC Radio 4 earlier this year.

  5. Essex one of only six areas that want new grammar schools, study sayspublished at 09:59 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    Essex is only one of six areas in England where parents want new grammar schools and creating them would benefit the wider school population, a study says.

    The Education Policy Institute, external modelled the impact of government plans to expand selective schools by looking at how 32,844 areas would be affected.

    Researchers found that broader education levels would be harmed if new selective schools were created in areas where more than half of highly attaining pupils could access grammar school places.

    The government called the study a crude attempt to second-guess the results of its consultation on new schools.

    A man who lost his job while recovering from meningitis says he has spent all his savings while trying to find new employment.

    Gerry Smith, from Westcliff-on-Sea, was one of 57 people let go from a Southend call centre in November. 

    With 30 years of administration experience behind him, Gerry hopes he can get back to work before Christmas.

    A shopkeeper fought off a robber in Witham last night by spraying red dye in his face, police say.

    The suspect attempted to burgle the Honeysuckle Stores at about 19:40 after brandishing a gun and demanding cash.

    The 41-year-old victim managed to spray him in the face and pressed a panic alarm. 

    The suspect ran off empty handed. No arrests have been made.

    A man arrested at Stansted Airport on suspicion of committing a terror offence has been bailed.

    The 41-year-old was detained on Friday after allegedly travelling to Syria, the Met Police said. 

    He was taken to a police station in south London and bailed to a future date. 

    It's the second terror-related arrest at the north Essex terminal in seven days, after a 49-year-old from south Essex was held on Monday.

  11. Further details on arrests at travellers' sitepublished at 08:13 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    Two men from Ipswich, aged 31 and 22, one man from Wickford, Essex, aged 19, one man from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, aged 23, and a teenage boy were arrested early this morning on suspicion of violent disorder, following incidents at the West Meadows travellers' site in Ipswich last night.

    A  20-year-old man, also from Wickford, has been detained on suspicion of causing criminal damage.

    Police were called just after 22:00 to reports that a number of properties were being damaged.

    They say a number of officers will remain on the site, to offer reassurance to the community.
