    One of the two teenagers killed in the crash in Leigh-on-Sea, Reigan Knight, had been an apprentice with Kent-based cabling firm Monarch Communications, external for a year and a half.

    Its managing director Wayne Morley said: "He was a bubbly little character. I absolutely loved him to bits and every time he came into the office he brought a bit of sunshine with him.

    "He was very polite, mature for his age and always wanting to learn. I took him on as an apprentice and I took one of his friends on after he turned out to be so good. 

    "We're absolutely devastated. It's such a waste of life - he's barely even lived and few of the lads have had to have time off work as they can't handle coming in.

    "It's going to take a bit of time for everyone to get back to normal."

    I've just telephoned British Transport Police to find out more about the trespass incident on the line between Ipswich and Manningtree which has been affecting rail services in the area.

    They told me they were called at 12:59 with reports that a man was on the railway line.

    Rail services were suspended while they searched the area, but no-one was found.

    It's thought a normal service should resume soon.

    Southend United, external will not be "officially" marking the deaths of teenagers Reigan Knight and Liam Phillips at tomorrow's home game against Charlton.

    Some fans are expected to begin a minute's applause in the 17th minute of the match - to reflect the ages of the two 17-year-olds.

    A spokesman for the football club said it would be a fan-led act which supporters were free to take part in.

    The club said it would be marking the teenagers' deaths, along with the deaths of other supporters, at its regular end-of-season remembrance event.

  7. Arrest after police threatened with 'firearm' in villagepublished at 13:46 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2016

    A man has been arrested in connection with a burglary in which police were threatened with what they believe was a firearm.

    Officers went to Stanley Road, Wivenhoe, on the evening of Tuesday, 13 December.

    The suspect threatened them and ran off.

    A 24-year-old from Colchester attended Chelmsford police station and he has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and possession of firearms offences. 

    He has been released on police bail until 18 January, pending further inquiries.

    Some Southend United fans are asking their fellow supporters to give a minute's applause to the two 17-year-olds killed in a car crash in Leigh-on-Sea on Tuesday.

    The applause would take place in the 17th minute during Saturday's match at home to Charlton - reflecting the ages of Reigan Knight and Liam Phillips.

    Dominika Siemienczuk was one of the organisers of last night's vigil for the dead youths at Leigh-on-Sea's waterfront.

    One of Reigan Knight's school friends spoke to BBC Essex at the vigil.

    Natty Dodds said: "He didn't know anyone when he came to my school. We used to write music together - some bars to spit to each other.

    "He was always happy, but when he wasn't he wasn't scared of telling you how he felt.

    "Even if you didn't give the best advice, he'd still listen to you.

    "It makes you blood brothers, pretty much."

    "He left school and got a job installing Virgin Media into people's TVs. After school we went our separate ways, but whenever we'd meet up it would be like the old times. There'd be 100% love.

    "I can't sleep or eat. Working's been dreadful. I can't focus straight.

    "There's not a minute or second I don't think of him.

    "The times I met him, or should have met him, are playing around in my head."

    Paramedics on duty with the East of England Ambulance Service, external are tweeting live updates today, as they respond to calls, external across the region.

    Bosses at the service thanked staff for responding to "recording-breaking demand" this Christmas, with nearly 800 more calls received compared to last year.

    From 19:00 on Christmas Eve to 23:00 on Boxing Day, its three control rooms handled 6,849 calls. This is compared to 6,021 in the same period last December.

    Natty Dodds said he was particularly close to Reigan Knight: "Deep down I'm always going to love the kids.

    "I was talking to him the day before he died to meet up with him the next day. If there was anyone that could make you laugh, it would be him.

    "Reigan, I love you, mate."

    About 300 people gathered in Leigh-on-Sea last night to remember two 17-year-old boys who died when the car they were in crashed while being followed by a police car.

    Reigan Knight and Liam Phillips were killed when the Ford Escort they were passengers in crashed in Southsea Avenue.

    A 16-year-old from Great Wakering has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, causing death by driving without a licence and causing death by driving without insurance. His next court appearance is at Basildon Youth Court on 10 January.

    A 17-year-old from Shoebury arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis has been released on bail until 14 January.
