  1. Liver surgery apparatus campaign gets £2,500 boostpublished at 11:08 British Summer Time 28 March 2017

    A campaign for a specialist machine to assist keyhole liver surgery at Broomfield Hospital has received a boost of £2,500 from the Rotary Club of Chelmer Bridge. 

    Laparoscopic liver retractors are designed for surgery on overweight and obese patients but can equally be used on patients with normal size livers.

    The funds came predominantly from The New Year's Day Concert performed by the Essex Young People's Orchestra at Chelmsford Cathedral, which is one of the group's annual events.

    A new life-saving defibrillator machine is now provided at the town hall in Clacton.

    The machine has been provided by the Holland and Clacton First Responders and paid for by Clacton Carnival Association from the street procession collections. 

    Free Heartstart cardiopulmonary resuscitation training, external is to be given to anyone who would like it, especially those living or working in the vicinity of the town hall, and that will be getting under way every morning from Monday 24 April to Friday 28 April.

    A new £1 coin goes into circulation today.

    The new 12-sided coin with gold and silver coloured sections has been minted to cut down counterfeiting. 

    But many amusement arcade owners, like Martin Richardson of the Happidrome at Southend, are not happy.

    Every ride on Clacton Pier, external is to be checked over for compliance with safety regulations before the new season starts at the resort by a specialist firm from Denmark. 

    Mobaro Park had been brought in to deliver high-quality operations, maintenance and all-round procedures for 2017, pier director Billy Ball said.

    "This new partnership will enable us to streamline our daily checks so that key staff can maintain our safety-first, fun-next approach," he said.

  6. Euromillions winner saves rock festivalpublished at 08:58 British Summer Time 28 March 2017

    A Haverhill businessman, who won £148m on the Euromillions draw with his wife five years ago, has given the Cambridge Rock Festival, external a new lease of life.

    Adrian Bayford (pictured with his wife Gillian, from whom he has since separated) is hosting the festival in the grounds of his home at Horseheath, Cambridgeshire.

    Festival founder Dave Roberts said it was an expansion of Mr Bayford's musical interest: "I know Adrian would like to do lots of things with his estate and great, he's a lovely fellow, and absolutely into his music.

    "He has come to us with love of music so the two have kind of knitted together."

  7. PC brought up in Braintree injured in Westminster terror attack published at 08:31 British Summer Time 28 March 2017

    A police officer brought up in Braintree is believed to have suffered two broken legs and a broken arm during the terror incident on Westminster Bridge six days ago. 

    PC Kris Aves, 35, had just received an award for helping families deal with the impact of crime and was returning from the commendation ceremony.

    He is now in a London hospital recovering with his family at the bedside. 

    He was among a group of police award winners walking over Westminster Bridge when Khalid Masood drove into pedestrians at more than 70mph in a four-wheel drive car. 

    Friends have described PC Aves on social media as a "top bloke" and have wished him a speedy recovery. 

    His family has requested privacy to allow him time to recuperate from injuries described as "life-changing".

  17. Future of water-damaged Venetian bridge at resort discussedpublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 27 March 2017

    The future of Clacton's 103-year-old Venetian Bridge is up for discussion after part of the structure crumbled away in July 2014. 

    Tendring District Council, external appointed engineering consultants for expert advice and then went out to tender for firms to bid to carry out repairs after an investigation revealed the extent of erosion.

    The top deck of the bridge was not waterproof and moisture got in to the structure over a long period of time corroding the reinforcements. 

    Emergency props were put in place under the arch as a precautionary measure and remain today. 

    Repairs identiified as needed during the investigation have proved costly. 

    The council has decided to consider a number of options in a report due to be discussed by the council's Cabinet in the coming weeks. 

    Nick Turner, cabinet member for commercialisation, seafronts and parking, said the aim is to look at the most cost-effective way of achieving the repairs "and, if possible, improve the offer in that area".

    A man in his 20s has been taken to hospital after being stabbed in a cemetery in Sudbury.

    Police were called to the site off Newton Road in the town, at 10:45 this morning.

    His injuries, believed to be a single stab wound, aren't thought to be life-threatening.

  19. Hospital to pay more than £5m damages over 'negligence claim' published at 17:06 British Summer Time 27 March 2017

    A girl born severely disabled at Basildon Hospital , external has won a compensation and care package worth more than £5m. 

    The youngster was left facing a lifetime of disability after her brain was starved of oxygen in the moments leading up to her birth in 2009.

    A trial was due to begin today at the High Court in London but after late negotiations, the family and NHS agreed to settle the case. 

    The girl's family accused the hospital of "negligence" by failing to monitor her heart while still in the womb. 

    She will be confined to a wheelchair for life and suffers additional problems with movement and communication. 

    The compensation, approved by a judge today, will see her receive £5.3m immediately, with annual payments to cover the cost of her care for the rest of her life. 

    The judge ordered that no details should be given that might identify the girl or her family.
