Four lengths of pipe, each more than half a mile long are being run from one side of the river to the other, from Trimley to Shotley in the first phase of the overhaul.

And the first of those four pipes has been successfully laid under the river bed.

"There was a sigh of relief last night when I got the text to say it had come through safely," said Chris Sugars of UK Power Networks, external.

"Once you've done one then you've got an idea of what the issues are, so we hope the others can come through nice and smoothly."

Once this part of the operation is complete, two of the four cables at Shotley will then be taken to Dovercourt/Harwich under the River Stour, a stretch of just over a mile.

Once finished, work will begin removing the 13 miles of pylons and overhead wires which have been a part of the landscape for the past 60 years, but which will no longer be needed.

  14. Ballot for strike action on Greater Angliapublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 18 July 2017

    Mariam Issimdar
    BBC News

Conductors on Greater Anglia railway services are to be balloted on possible strike action on the issue of driver-only operated trains.

    Train driver

The union, which is concerned about job losses, wants a guarantee from Greater Anglia that when it introduces new driver-only trains in 2019 it will keep conductors on board.

Steve Hedley of the RMT said: "It's become clear at the last meeting that we had with senior management that the government and the Department for Transport are imposing on the company the fact they have to deliver driver-only operation.

"Obviously that's a position that we can't accept and that the drivers' union ASLEF can't accept either."

In a statement, Richard Dean, Greater Anglia spokesman, said: "We have conductors on our Intercity service between Norwich and London Liverpool Street and on our rural routes across East Anglia.

"They are highly-valued colleagues and we have no plans to remove them from our trains. In fact, we have a new conductors' training course starting in August.

"We hold regular meetings with the unions which represent our colleagues. These meetings will continue as we remain available for talks to resolve this issue.”

The union is already involved in a lengthy dispute with Southern Rail over the introduction of driver-only trains.

  15. School holidays bring fears of anti-social behaviourpublished at 10:01 British Summer Time 18 July 2017

A Canvey Island councillor is predicting more anti-social behaviour as soon as the schools break up for summer.

Dave Blackwell says he's concerned as the area has had lots of problems in the past.

Latest figures reveal that in the year to April, Essex Police received more than 52,000 , externalreports of anti-social behaviour across the county.

Dave Blackwell from the Canvey Island Independent Party said: "The local fire brigade dread the summer holidays because they know the kids are going to set fire to the grass on the local nature reserve.

"I think everybody has got to work hard to put things in place. Local authorities have to put on more things for kids to do, to keep the kids more occupied."

Alex Dobinson from the south Essex charity, Yellow Door,, external says youth services being cut could be contributing to the problem.

"If you look at the cuts around the county, the biggest cuts have been for young people and I think that is a problem.

"Lots of charities like ourselves have been trying to take up the slack with the support of Essex Youth Service but there isn't enough support for the minority that might cause trouble," she added.

Sgt Janet Bloomfield of Essex Police's youth action team said: "If people in Canvey know who's causing the problems then please tell us, because once we identify them we can put some strategies in place and deal with them as individuals rather than this blanket 'all young people in Canvey are a nuisance' which really isn't the case."

She also says the statistics can be misleading because they refer to a wide-range of incidents not necessarily "people running riot".

For instance, a cat defacating on a neighbour's lawn is recorded as anti-social behaviour by police.

  16. Police say Dobbin investigation 'isn't closed'published at 09:06 British Summer Time 18 July 2017

    Mariam Issimdar
    BBC News

Police involved in bringing to trial 13 men involved in a savage post-football match attack against a rival fan say the case isn't over yet.

    Det Ch Insp Martin Passmore

Twelve men convicted of attacking Simon Dobbin are beginning jail terms totalling more than 40 years today.

Mr Dobbin, a Cambridge United fan from Mildenhall, was left with serious brain damage after being set upon in Southend in 2015 after going to watch his team play at Southend United's Roots Hall ground.

The attack happened outside The Railway pub as the victim was heading with friends to Prittlewell railway station.

The 12 have been convicted of either violent disorder or conspiracy to commit violent disorder, rather than assault.

Det Ch Insp Martin Passmore said: "Bearing in mind we've convicted 12 people for the violent disorder aspects of this, there's 12 more as far as I'm concerned who went out of that pub that day who are perhaps responsible for these devastating injuries.

"This case isn't closed. It's not finished and if I can identify those that were directly responsible for Simon Dobbin's injuries I would love to go out there with my team and bring them to justice as well."

Nicole Dobbin and her daughter Emily have called for tougher action, during and after court proceedings yesterday.

They would like to see someone convicted of attempted murder given that Simon Dobbin was clinically dead for seven minutes before being saved by paramedics.
