    A councillor has expressed "deep concerns" over the cost of a new traffic island in Brentwood after initially agreeing that it was needed.

    It's being installed on the A128 Tilbury Road and carried a price tag of £65,000, Essex County Council said.

    Liberal Democrat Barry Aspinell agrees he approved of the plan, but now he isn't happy after discovering the full cost.

    The council said in a statement to BBC Essex that the crossing requires a great deal of work and the local highways panel makes a final decision based on whether it provides good value for money.

    A 14-year-old girl from Essex has been voted the first winner of The Voice Kids UK, external on ITV.

    Jess Folley, who lives near Brentwood, has been given a £30,000 music bursary as part of her prize.

    She has been performing and singing since she was a toddler and was crowned champion of the singing competition's inaugural series on Sunday night.

    Her rendition of Beyonce's Love On Top was voted the winning performance by viewers.

    "I am so proud pf these guys they are my best friends," referring to her fellow contestants.

    Jess thanked her coach, Brentwood singer Pixie Lott, adding: "I can't believe it."

    A group of 13 men is due to be sentenced today over an attack on a Cambridge United football fan in which left him brain-damaged.

    Simon Dobbin, from Mildenhall in Suffolk, was set upon following a match at Southend United in March 2015.

    On Friday the men were convicted for their roles in the attack outside a Southend pub.

    The prosecution at Basildon Crown Court described the attack on the 44-year-old as a "carefully prepared ambush".

    Nine men were convicted of violent disorder, three were found guilty of conspiracy to commit violent disorder and a 13th man was found guilty of assisting an offender.

    They'll return to the court today for sentencing after spending the weekend in custody.
