Councillors in Colchester are considering a late night levy on the town's bars in order to fund extra police officers.
It means bars, clubs and shops that stay open late serving alcohol could pay more than £1,000 extra each year.
Mike Lilley, the councillor in charge of public safety in the town, said: "There was an application last week from one of the bars that wanted to open until 04:30 in the morning.
"We thought the police are really struggling with numbers, they haven't got enough to cope, we need to look at trying to get as much as possible to help them, so I've asked the officers to look at the late night levy and see if we can make it work."
Brett Sanders, manager of the Golden Fleece pub (above) in Chelmsford, where a similar scheme was introduced in 2014, said: "It would sound fantastic if the money went to the police and the police were promising to put police on the street.
"In the case of Chelmsford, the police actually agreed to return the money to the council and let the council use the money how they saw fit, so therefore we didn't see any extra police on the street and I would question, the money raised, is that going to put police officers on the street? I would doubt it very much."
A Chelmsford City Council spokesman said: "The late night levy has been used to fund the ongoing work of the medical triage team provided on Friday and Saturday nights by Open Road, the alcohol intervention provider for our area, to financially support the comprehensive CCTV service which the city centre benefits from."
He added the money was also used for the introduction of the "Best Bar None, external initiative", which has seen "a reduction in crime for all accredited premises to date".
We've just been told that a 15-year-old boy died when he was struck by a train close to Ingatestone station.
William Tweed from the town died yesterday afternoon.
British Transport Police officers were called to the line at 16:35 and attended alongside paramedics from the East of England Ambulance Service.
Specialist officers are supporting William's family and work is ongoing to establish how he came to be on the tracks.
His death is not being treated as suspicious.
Five men arrested on Thursday after more than 1,000 cannabis plants were found in Wickford have been released under investigation.
Police made the discovery at an address on Burnham Road, Battlesbridge just after 08:00.
The men, aged 56, 51, 38, 36 and 33, were arrested on suspicion of the cultivation of the cannabis.
Greater Anglia has apologised after travellers criticised the rail operator for a lack of communication following an incident on the line near Ingatestone.
Services to and from the capital were disrupted for about six hours yesterday afternoon after a person was struck by a train.
Spokeswoman Kerri Worral said: "The staff on the trains should have been making regular announcements just to keep people informed of what was happening.
"At the stations we have our customer information screens, they're a help-point, and at some stations we ask extra staff to go down to those stations to support the staff that are there.
"I know staff on staff stations do everything they can to try and keep people informed, but when there's large volumes of people that can become more difficult."
A Braintree holidaymaker says he's relieved to be home after "out-running" Hurricane Irma in the US.
Julian Albert had to drive thousands of miles to catch a re-arranged flight from New York City after Orlando Airport shut down.
He said it was traumatic: "You don't know what you're up against.
"You don't know if you're going to be safe. You don't know how you're going to get home.
"You have to put your health, your safety, before anything, no matter what the cost is, because it cost us a lot of money."

Read MoreA man is being treated in hospital for multiple injuries after he fell from a roof in Clacton.
The 34-year-old was reported to have been involved in a verbal confrontation with six or seven youths on Jackson Road at about 20:00 on Wednesday, police say.
He ran off and is believed to have been followed by the group.
He ran into an alleyway and on to the roof of a shopping parade, before falling from height.
Det Sgt Richard Edwards said: "It is unclear how the man came to fall from the roof.
"We are appealing for witnesses who saw this group of girls and boys, who were described as being aged in their teens or early 20s.
"We also want to hear from anyone who saw what happened."
Police say the man is in a "critical but stable" condition in Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

Local politicians have been paying tribute to the former Essex MP Sir Teddy Taylor who died last night aged 80.
He was MP for Southend East for 25 years.
The man who succeeded him, James Duddridge, described him as "a great man and a colossus of British politics" while the leader of the Labour group on Southend council, Ian Gilbert, tweeted: "We disagreed on many things but he was always warm, courteous and helpful to his constituents".
Fellow Southend MP Sir David Amess said: "Sir Teddy had a reputation for being a first class constituency MP working 7 days a week to help local residents, with nothing being too much trouble.
"Southend has lost one of its finest ever representatives."
The MP for Harwich and North Essex Bernard Jenkin said: "He realised that, as a former Scottish MP, he had to earn the respect of people in Southend but my goodness he was a devoted constituency MP, devoted to Essex but also devoted to the United Kingdom because he was famously a euro-sceptic."
Sir Teddy played a major role in last year's referendum campaign.
James Moyles, who organised the Vote Leave campaign in the East of England, said: "Sheila (his wife) and Teddy delivered more leaflets than any other person in Southend and he was thrilled with the result we achieved".
