  2. Student taking on 108-mile trek for children’s charitypublished at 17:58 British Summer Time 18 May 2017

    A Drama and Theatre Studies student at the University of Birmingham is to walk 108 miles from Birmingham to Aldershot in five days in aid of charity.

    The route of 18-year-old Rachel Baker will go through Warwick, Banbury, Oxford and Reading. The aim is to cover 27 miles a day from 20 to 24 May in aid of The Children’s Society.

    She said: "I originally decided to the trek because it combined things I enjoy like helping people, raising awareness and exploring the beautiful countryside.

    "I blooming love a challenge and I’m really looking forward to walking across the West Midlands, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Hampshire and raising money for such as worthy cause along the way."

    Police in Southampton are releasing an e-fit image, external of a man they would like to speak to after a burglary in Carlton Crescent.

    At some point between 19:00 on 19 April and 18:30 on 21 April, electronics were taken from a flat after someone broke in.

    Items taken included a Playstation 4, two Citizen watches, a Sony Xperia mobile phone, and two digital cameras with separate lenses.

    The man police want to speak to is black, slim, with a pointed face, 5ft 10ins tall, and was wearing a plain beige or pale green flat cap, jeans and a dark anorak type jacket covering his neck.

    He was also carrying a green rucksack in his right arm.

    The NSPCC has released a statement following the guilty verdict in the murder trail of Joseph Eke who killed Harry House, the two-year-old son of his partner at their home near Dorchester last year.

  7. Thames Valley Police seizure leads to jail for lawnmower drug smugglerspublished at 17:07 British Summer Time 18 May 2017

    Two men who used shipments of lawnmowers to smuggle more than a tonne of ecstasy, cannabis and ketamine into the UK have been jailed for 14 years.

    Derek Maguire, 55, and Neil Snazel, 42, both of Manchester, worked together to bring the Class A and Class B drugs in 15 crates from the Netherlands.

    The pair were caught after Thames Valley Police seized a crate addressed to a courier in October 2015 and found a lawnmower containing 175lbs (80kg) of MDMA - the active ingredient in ecstasy pills.

    Maguire, 55, of Harbury Crescent, Manchester, was found guilty of eight charges concerning the production, possession and supply of drugs.

    Snazel, 42, of Kenworthy Lane, Manchester, was jailed for 14 years after admitting three similar offences.

    Hampshire Police has issued an appeal across South Yorkshire for information about Kieran Longhurst.

    Mr Longhurst, aged 19, of no fixed address, was arrested in connection with a rape investigation in Havant, but subsequently he failed to return on bail and the south coast force now believe he may be in the Sheffield area.

    Detectives say he is 6ft 6in tall, thin and with brown hair swept to the side.

    Speaking outside Winchester Crown Court after Joseph Eke, 22, was found guilty of the murder of the two-old-son of his partner, the senior investigating officer said the family of Harry House was "relieved and thankful".

    The man was approached by a group of teenage boys who assaulted him and then stole two mobile phones and an iPod.

    He was punched and kicked and fell to the floor. He suffered minor injuries.

    One 13-year-old boy and two 14-year-old boys from Southampton were arrested and released on bail.

    Cries of "Yes" and sobbing could be heard from the public gallery as the verdicts were announced following the trial of Joseph Eke.

    The 22-year-old showed no emotion as the jury found him guilty of the murder of the two-year-old son of his partner at their home in Broadmayne, Dorset, last May.

    The court heard Eke killed Harry House by "punching or kicking" him in the stomach in a "loss of temper" while the toddler's mother had popped to the shops.

    Jurors heard Harry died as a result of a blunt-force impact to the abdomen that split his pancreas in two. A post-mortem examination also showed he had a "potentially fatal" fractured skull.

    A 23-year-old man from Southsea was arrested on suspicion of three counts of burglary and released on bail.

    A 16-year-old from Southsea has also been arrested on suspicion of 17 counts of burglary with intent to steal.

    And a 19-year-old man from Southsea has been arrested on suspicion of 16 counts of burglary and one count of attempted burglary.

    A man has been found guilty of murdering his partner's two-year-old son who was kicked and punched to death.

    Joseph Eke, 22, attacked Harry House at the family home in Broadmayne, Dorset, last May while the toddler's mother was out.

    He was also convicted of grievous bodily harm but cleared of a charge of unlawful wounding following a trial at Winchester Crown Court.

    A coach and car collided just before 09:00 on the A3066 near Beaminster.

    The woman is said to have life-threatening injuries, and the road may be closed for some time.
