An endangered species of penguin has appeared on online dating site Plenty Of Fish to search for a mate.

Spruce, a one-year-old male Humboldt penguin, is looking for that special lady to take part in a breeding programme - after attempts to secure him a partner at other Sea Life centres failed.

His carers at Weymouth Sea Life Park are now appealing to the public to like and share Spruce's profile on social media to help them reach out to other parks and aquariums.

Sarah Everett from the park said: "Penguins are very affectionate birds by nature and often mate for life.

"I really want to see Spruce settle down with the right girl and after searches for potential mates at other Sea Life centres proved fruitless – they have the same problem as us, too many boys – I thought it was time to look further afield."

"We will encourage people to use different types of transport, because that's clearly one of the biggest contributors", said James Crosby, environmental health manager at Reading Borough Council.

The village itself is keeping quiet, with a printed notice on the front door of The Blackbird Café in Chapel Row reportedly requesting members of the media not to question patrons about the nuptials.

The ceremony is, understandably, blocked off from public gaze, taking place nearby in the village of Englefield.

However, 25% of all knife crime in Hampshire happens in the city, which equates to 528 incidents in the last year.

"If we can take one knife out of the hands of someone who wants to do something sinister, then it has been a success", said Sgt Charlie Ilderton from Southampton's Central Neighbourhood team.

"We had some hunting knives, a sword and some samurai swords, so we're always surprised by what is handed in."

The congregation at the Cumnor United Reformed Church has voted to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry there, making it the first in the region to do so.

Last year the Christian denomination decided to allow same-sex weddings, something which is still illegal for Catholics and Anglicans in England.

"We have always tried to promote a very inclusive welcome to whomever comes through the door," Reverend Nigel Appleton said.
