    A minute's​ silence to honour the victims of Saturday's terrorist attack in London is being observed across the country.

    In the South employees at town halls, police stations and other workplaces are paying their respects.

    Seven people were killed and 48 injured in Saturday's attack.

    The attackers were shot dead by police after driving into pedestrians on London Bridge and stabbing people in Borough Market.

  2. Driver killed as tree falls on carpublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 6 June 2017

    A driver has been killed after a tree blew over during high winds and landed on his car in Hampshire.

    The man was driving through Odiham on the A287 shortly after 07:15 BST when the tree collapsed onto his car.

    Hampshire Constabulary said the man died at the scene.

    His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

    A stretch of the road between Rye Common and Ewshot remains closed to allow an investigation to take place.

  4. 'Forces would struggle to respond to terrorist attack'published at 10:46 British Summer Time 6 June 2017

    Police in Dorset would struggle to respond to a terrorist incident as quickly as their counterparts in London, the Police and Crime Commissioner has said.

    Martyn Underhill said cuts to the number of police staff needed to be reassessed by the government after the election on 8 June.

    Mr Underhill said: "Most rural forces - Dorset included - would struggle to respond as quickly and as fully as the Metropolitan Police did on Saturday night."

    Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May gave a speech yesterday saying counter-terrorism budgets had been protected and that new powers would be given to the force if she remains in power.

  6. Monument unveiled to anti-slavery campaigner Buxtonpublished at 10:24 British Summer Time 6 June 2017

    A new monument commemorating the life of a leading anti-slavery campaigner has been unveiled in a dedication ceremony in Weymouth.

    Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, an MP for Weymouth in the 1800s, was a driving force behind the abolition of slavery.

    There are already memorials to him in London, Jamaica and Sierra Leone.

    The £90,000 monument, carved by Weymouth College stonemasonry students, is the result of seven years of work by the Thomas Fowell Buxton Society.

  7. Two arrests after rural police operationpublished at 10:17 British Summer Time 6 June 2017

    Two men have been arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and being equipped for theft following a rural police operation in Oxfordshire.

    Thames Valley Police said the men were stopped and searched between Stoke Talmage and Clare on Saturday.

    The force said the men, both 35 and from Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, were released under investigation.

    A book of condolence for the victims of Saturday's terrorist attack in London will be opened in Reading today.

    After Mayor Rose Williams leads a one-minute silence at 11:00, residents will be invited to add their thoughts to the book in the reception area of the Civic Offices.

    Councillor Williams said: “Following on from Manchester, it is heartbreaking to now have to mourn the victims of another horrific attack, this time in London.

    "Once more, the thoughts of everyone in Reading are with the families and friends of people who have lost their lives, or who have been injured."

  10. Muslim leaders call for earlier intervention to stop radicalisationpublished at 09:00 British Summer Time 6 June 2017

    Muslims in Slough have called for earlier intervention to stop children from being radicalised.

    Prominent community leader Zafar Ali is sending a letter to Theresa May today, calling on her to do more to prevent children being groomed.

    He told BBC Radio Berkshire that work to avoid youngsters being groomed by extremists has to start at school.

    And Saleha Latif, a young Muslim who is part of a group established to stop hatred, said it was the individual and not the place which leads to people being radicalised.

    "It tends to be people who feel isolated and who have got a lot of anger," she said.

  11. Five charged with Blackbird Leys murderpublished at 08:56 British Summer Time 6 June 2017

    Four men and a teenage boy have been charged with murder after a man died following a fight in Oxford.

    The brawl broke out at about 23:00 BST on Thursday in the Jourdain Road area of Blackbird Leys.

    Christopher Lemonius, 27, was found at the scene with serious injuries and later died in hospital.

    All five appear at Oxford Magistrates' Court later.

  14. Two dead as lorries and car crash on M3 near Winchesterpublished at 08:01 British Summer Time 6 June 2017

    A man and woman have died in a multi-vehicle crash on the M3 in Hampshire.

    The collision between three lorries and an Audi happened on the northbound carriageway of the motorway near Winchester at 10:15 BST on Monday.

    Police have appealed for witnesses who may have seen or captured the accident on a dashboard camera to contact them.

    The motorway was closed between junction 10 for Winchester and junction 9 at Winnall throughout the afternoon.

    It has since reopened.
