    A garden fire at a property in Woodley, Reading, is being treated as arson with intent to endanger life.

    Police believe the blaze in Drovers Way, which was close to the gas mains pipe at the property, may be linked to a string of other fires in the area 10 minutes apart on Tuesday afternoon.

    No-one was injured.

  5. Man with life-threatening injuries after fall in Bournemouthpublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    A man in his 40s has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after falling from a height in Bournemouth.

    He was found outside an address in Carnarvon Road, at about 00:32 BST on Wednesday. His next of kin have been informed.

    Dorset Police has opened an investigation into the incident.

    Det Con Sarah Close said: "...we are trying to find out if he fell or whether someone else was involved.

    "I would urge anyone who was in the Carnarvon Road area in the early hours of yesterday morning and witnessed what happened to please contact Dorset Police."

  7. Southampton General Hospital praised after making improvementspublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Critical care services at Southampton General Hospital have been rated as outstanding following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission.

    In its last inspection in 2015 it was told it required improvement in providing safe and responsive care.

    The results of the latest inspections from January and February have been released, and inspectors said they found significant improvements in the quality of all services that were inspected, with the trust’s overall rating raised to good.

    Professor Sir Mike Richards, the chief inspector of hospitals, said: "Throughout we found a trust which demonstrated a healthy impatience to improve - from the top down.

    "We came across many examples where the staff interactions with patients or relatives had exceeded expectations... not only clinical staff, but domestic, portering, catering and clerical staff too."

  8. Poole Housing Partnership putting on extra staff in tower blockspublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Poole Housing Partnership has released a statement following the fire that engulfed Grenfell Tower in west London.

    It says: "We have always worked closely with Dorset & Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service to ensure the safety of our blocks of flats.

    "We commission expert fire safety assessors to regularly carry out inspections of all our blocks of flats and any recommendations they make are taken forwards.

    "We are currently awaiting details on the cause of the fire and will respond accordingly."

    Extra staff will be on hand at all its tower blocks to deal with residents' concerns, it added.

    The BBC's Crimewatch is asking for the public's help to identify a body discovered in Somerset 15 years ago.

    This is what police already believe:

    • He died between late 1999 and 2000
    • There was a violent assault before he died
    • The body was probably kept elsewhere before being buried in 2001
    • He is aged between mid-20s and mid-30s
    • DNA shows he may have spent time between Plymouth, Bude, Poole and Bristol
    • Most likely to be North African, Asian, Middle Eastern or Mediterranean
  12. Southampton's tower blocks 'safe', council writespublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Southampton City Council has sent a letter to tenants in its tower blocks in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

    It says the results of its own improvement works are "robust" and full fire risk assessments were carried out.

    "There is nothing at all to suggest that the system is unsafe in any way," Steve Smith, in charge of housing and neighbourhoods, writes.

    A council has voiced concerns about the government's "excessively optimistic" air pollution estimates.

    Oxford's air breaks European limits for nitrogen dioxide but a government action plan, external suggests the city will hit targets by 2020.

    Oxford City Council said it was "surprised" by the estimate and "concerned" about the modelling used.

    A postman from Caversham, who died earlier this year, is to have a community centre named in his honour

    Amersham Road Youth and Community Centre will be renamed The Weller Centre following a vote by local residents.

    Martin Weller, who joined Royal Mail when he was 18, was a familiar face in the area and volunteered with Caversham Children's Fund.

    Former BBC breakfast presenter Sian Williams will be given an honorary degree by Oxford Brookes University.

    The broadcaster studied English and History at Oxford Polytechnic (now Oxford Brookes) before launching her career in journalism.

    Daniel Battsek, director of Fim4, and John Assael, the co-founder of Assael Achitecture, are among others receiving honorary degrees at the June graduation ceremonies.

    Following the fatal tower block blaze in London, people living in high-rise buildings across England are being given safety advice.

    Most housing associations and councils have issued statements to say their accommodation complies with regulations and is safe.

    Some fire brigades have described their high-rise training facilities.

    The authorities have also expressed sorrow over the deaths at Grenfell Tower in north Kensington.

    They included Oxford City Council, which said it was carrying out renovations that "have delivered substantial improvements" to fire safety.

    Plans to cut children's hospital services in Dorchester and create a premature baby unit in east Dorset have been met with strong opposition.

    The proposal formed part of a public consultation by Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) into a shake-up of health services in the county.

    The consultation took into account 18,500 questionnaires, 2,000 people at drop-in sessions, 1,000 people interviewed over the phone and some paid focus groups.

    The most contentious element - to create a single special care baby unit for premature babies covering the whole county - was rejected by two-thirds of people.

    The CCG said it would consider all the responses.

    Three locations in the South where musical history was made are getting blue plaques as part of BBC Music Day.

    They include the Fox and Hounds Pub in Caversham, which was where Paul McCartney and John Lennon played their only gig as The Nerk Twins.

    It's the former home of Chipping Norton Studios, where bands like Status Quo, Duran Duran and Radiohead recorded.

    Harbour Lights in Southampton is the third location to be recognised - it's where Jimmy Kennedy had the idea for the song Harbour Lights.
