  2. Driver assaulted by cyclist in Oxfordpublished at 17:48 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

    Man who may have vital information about Oxford assault

    A driver needed hospital treatment after an argument with a cyclist in Oxford turned violent.

    It happened in Walton Street at about 18:15 on Friday 9 June after the cyclist accused the driver of passing too close to him.

    An argument broke out which the 36-year-old driver filmed, and his hand was grabbed and twisted. It caused ligament damage to his arm which he had treated in hospital.

    Thames Valley has since released a picture of a man who is believed to have vital information about the incident.

  5. 'Absolute legend' former Lord Mayor of Oxford Bill Buckingham diespublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

    Former Lord Mayor of Oxford Bill Buckingham has passed away, Oxford City Council has announced.

    Mr Buckingham was a councillor for more than 40 years, and represented Rose Hill from 1991 until he retired in 2006.

    He cut the ribbon at the opening of Rose Hill Community Centre last year (pictured below, left), and its ballroom is named after him.

    Leader of the council Bob Price described him as a “voice of reason and experience on housing and community matters in particular”.

    “He was the kindest and most generous person you could ever hope to meet”, he added.

    Deputy leader Ed Turner called him an “absolute legend”.

    He said: “He fought to defend our freedom in the Second World War, and it always meant a lot to see Bill on Remembrance Sunday.

    “He was instrumental in getting Rose Hill its first two community centres, and of course opened the third one just over a year ago.”

    Wyke Coastguard has thanked passer-by who helped a woman who had fallen from her wheelchair on Weymouth seafront yesterday.

    After being given first aid by beachgoers and lifeguards, she was airlifted from the beach after suffering "a lot of discomfort" when her front wheel fell off the kerb.

    A former teacher who sexually abused young children at a summer holiday playscheme and other locations has been jailed for 11 years.

    Michael Gibbons, 27, of Dickens Way, Yateley, admitted 16 counts of abuse against seven boys and girls, aged as young as four.

    He pleaded guilty at Winchester Crown Court in April to nine sexual assaults, including two at Farnborough Leisure Centre while he was employed as a play worker.Gibbons, who also worked with children with special needs and adults with learning disabilities, further admitted one count of oral rape, four counts of inciting children to engage in sexual activity and two attempted sexual assaults.

    Great Britain's Land Rover BAR Academy have won the Youth America's Cup.

    The Portsmouth-based British team came second in the final race of the event to finish on 50 points, two points ahead of defending champions NZL Sailing Team.

    Switzerland's Team Tilt finished third in the competition, in which teams are comprised of 18 to 24 year olds.

    "These young talents are the superstars of the future," said event director Roman Hagara. "They're going to take the sport to the next level."

    England seamer James Anderson, who took 3-5 on the third evening, finished with figures of 4-20 as the Red Rose skittled Hampshire for 168 on day four.

    The visitors had resumed on 50-5, still trailing by 148, and were unable to make Lancashire bat again.

    Dane Vilas' 244 had put the home team in control earlier in the match.

    Alex Davies and Ryan McLaren also chipped in with centuries to give Lancashire a big first-innings lead, but it was their impressive bowling display in Hampshire's second innings that ensured victory.

    Police in Portsmouth have issued a warning after a number of teenagers were taken to hospital having taken tablets, believed to be diazepam.

    The group of boys and girls aged 13-15 shared the tranquilliser at Kingston recreation ground on Wednesday evening and admitted to Queen Alexandra hospital in the early hours of this morning.

    Some of those involved are still receiving treatment, others have been discharged and are recovering at home.

  12. Water supplies cut following New Forest pipe burstpublished at 16:11 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

    An update on the burst water pipe which has disrupted traffic on the A35 at Ashurst in the New Forest.

    Southern Water has said it has temporarily suspended water supplies to around 60 properties as engineeers work to fix the leak.

    An academy school is hiring a director of isolations and detentions to administer "tough love" in a "purpose-built behaviour correction unit".

    Magna Academy in Poole is seeking a "strong disciplinarian" for the role, which pays between £24,964 and £29,323.

    A spokesman said the unit allowed the school to continue teaching disruptive students separately so no learning time was "stolen" from other pupils.

    It said addressing negative behaviour helped students "become good citizens".

    A memorial to a Red Arrows pilot who died following a display at the Bournemouth Air Festival is to be moved following a cliff landslip last year.

    The sculpture in memory of Fl Lt Jon Egging has been cordoned off since the slip at East Cliff in April 2016. It is to be moved to the top of the East Cliff Zig-Zag path nearby.

    The Bishop of Oxford, the Rt Rev Stephen Croft, has been asked to meet Lord Carey over allegations the church "colluded" with convicted sex abuser Peter Ball when he was archbishop.

    In a statement he said: "With reference to the criticism of former Archbishop George Carey in the report, the Archbishop of Canterbury has written to Lord Carey and asked him to carefully consider his position as honorary assistant bishop.

    "As I hold responsibility for granting him a licence to enable him to carry out his duties, Archbishop Justin has asked Lord Carey to talk to me and we have agreed to meet in the coming days for that conversation. In the meantime he has voluntarily agreed to step back from public ministry.”
