  1. Motorcyclist dies on the Isle of Wightpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

    A 30-year-old man has died in a crash on the Isle of Wight.

    The motorcyclist was pronounced dead on the scene after hitting a Volkswagen Beetle on Corf Road, Shalfleet.

    It happened at around 5.50pm yesterday.

    Police are still trying to work out exactly what happened.

    Senior figures in the Church of England "colluded" with a former bishop who abused young men, an independent review has found.

    Peter Ball, who is now 85, was jailed for 32 months in October 2015 after admitting sex offences against 18 teenagers and young men.

    The former bishop of Lewes and bishop of Gloucester carried out the abuse between the 1970s and 1990s

    Dame Moira Gibb's review criticises ex-Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey.

    He has been asked to step down from his position as an honorary assistant bishop in the Docese of Oxford by the current archbishop, Justin Welby.

    The locations and details of all ancient hill forts in the UK and Ireland have been mapped in an online database for the first time.

    Scientists found 4,147 sites - ranging from well-preserved forts to those where only crop marks are left.

    Researchers from the University of Edinburgh, University of Oxford and University College Cork spent five years on the project.

    A missing 14-year-old girl from Oxford has been found.

    Police said Chloe Maughan is "safe and well" and have thanked the public for their help.

    Four buildings in the South of England have won awards from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

    The 2017 RIBA National Awards have gone to three buildings in Oxfordshire, and one in Hampshire:

    • Art & Design Building at Bedales School in Petersfield, Hampshire.
    • Warwick Hall Community Centre in Burford, Oxfordshire.
    • The Berrow Foundation Building and New Garden Building, Lincoln College, Oxford.
    • Magdalen College Library in Oxford.

    The buildings are amongst 49 across the UK to receive the awards, and will now have a chance to be shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize.

  7. Motorists warned of delays after A35 burst water pipepublished at 11:11 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

    A road closure in the New Forest caused by a burst water pipe on the A35 at Ashurst earlier has been lifted by police - however two-way temporary traffic lights are in place while the work is carried out to repair the water pipe.

    The burst at Hunters Hill between the the junction of Lyndhurst Rd and New Road happened in the early hours.

    The nearby New Forest Inn has been forced to close today because water from the burst has flooded into the pub.

    A report into the troubled Southern rail franchise that the government said it could not publish before the election has been made public.

    It was commissioned last September and written by Chris Gibb, a non-executive director at Network Rail.

    Last week, the RMT union demanded it should be released immediately

    Publishing the paper, the Department for Transport said it found the main cause of Southern disruption was union action and high levels of sick leave.

    Police seized a number of devices in raids in Bracknell and Lincolnshire this morning

    Police investigating unauthorised intrusion into Microsoft's networks have arrested a man from Bracknell.

    The 25-year-old was arrested this morning under computer misuse act offences.

    A 22-year-old from Lincolnshire has also been arrested on suspicion of gaining unauthorised access to a computer.

    The South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU) is working with the FBI and Europol on the investigation.

    Brittany Ferries has ordered its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) ship.

    The cross-channel Honfleur will sail from Portsmouth.

    It follows tougher rules governing pollution from older ships, which burn heavy oil.

    The new ship will arrive in two years' time and will serve Brittany's busiest route, from Portsmouth to Caen.

    A BBC South investigation has revealed drug dealers in the region are increasingly using the practise of "cuckooing".

    It's when criminals from outside the area target the homes of vulnerable people and use their properties to sell drugs.

    Nearly 200 gangmembers from London, Liverpool and elsewhere have been convicted of the crime in the South since 2015.

  14. New Forest pub forced to close after water pipe burstspublished at 08:56 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

    A New Forest pub has been forced to close after water from a burst pipe flooded into the building.

    The pipe burst earlier causing the road to crack and lift on the A35 Lyndhurst Road.

    Water has flooded into The New Forest Inn and led to the closure of the road at Hunters Hill.

    Southern Water said its engineers were expected to turn water supplies off to assess the collapse.

  15. Money raised to buy home for Syrian refugeespublished at 08:44 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

    £150,000 has been pledged towards a house for Syrian refugees by a group of people from Wimborne in Dorset.

    It's more than half the amount needed to purchase a home for a family that left Syria for safety.

    The charity, International Care Network, says six families have settled in Dorset following the government's pledge to take 20,000 refugees by 2020.

  16. New Forest water pipe collapse closes Ashurst A35published at 08:19 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

    A burst water pipe has led to the closure of a section of one of the major routes through the New Forest.

    The A35 Lyndhurst Road has been closed at Ashurst between New Road and Whartons Lane after the pipe burst causing the road to crack and lift.

    Southern Water said its engineers were expected to turn water supplies off to assess the collapse.

    The firm said the hot weather can mean the soil dries out causing pipes to shift and break.

    Tests carried out on water samples from the burst have revealed it is not believed to be sewage-related as ammonia was not present.
