    An immigration removal centre previously criticised for the effects of detention on the men held there has been judged "well run" in an annual report.

    The Independent Monitoring Board's (IMB) annual report of The Verne on Portland said it also showed "a positive emphasis on humane treatment".

    However, it said those with mental health issues and suspected tuberculosis were "inappropriately held in unsuitable accommodation". Built in 1840, much of the building is Grade II listed.

    IMB also said the board became "increasingly concerned" about the number of night time arrivals being "very high".

    In September last there were 223 arrivals and 44 leavers between 20:00 and 06:00 BST.

    A judge has ordered a retrial on four manslaughter charges against the head of a yacht firm, after a jury at Winchester Crown Court was unable to reach verdicts.

    Earlier the jury convicted Douglas Innes, 42, and his firm Stormforce Coaching of failing to ensure the safe operation of the yacht Cheeki Rafiki, which sank in the Atlantic in May 2014 with the loss of its four crew.

    No date has been set for the second trial, which is expected to last two weeks.

    The mother of a 21-year-old woman with a rare disease has said she believes incompetence at a hospice "killed" her daughter.

    On Wednesday an inquest heard Emily Bushaway died when staff at Helen & Douglas House in Oxford failed to replace part of her breathing tube.

    Her mother, Lisa Bushaway, said a nurse threw part of a valve "in the bin and then connected it back up".

    Coroner Darren Salter said the valve was unfamiliar to staff at the hospice.

    Three men have been arrested in connection with the rape of a woman after she attended the Henley Royal Regatta.

    The woman, in her 20s, left the event's Chinawhite enclosure between 00:00 and 02:30 BST on Sunday 2 July with men she had met there, police said.

    She walked with them to a car in the Harpsden Road and Reading Road area and was raped outside it.

    A member of the public found her near the Three Horseshoes public house shortly after.

    Two men, aged 23 and 24, from Bedford and a 26-year-old man from Loughborough have been arrested on suspicion of rape in connection with this incident.

    They have been released while inquiries continue.

    Det Insp Ali Driver, from Oxfordshire Force CID, said: “The victim is being supported by specially trained officers at this time.

    “If you have any information about this incident, please come forward and speak to officers as this could assist with our investigation.”

    The Readipop Festival kicks off today in Caversham with a whole host of acts from local bands to indie legends.

    The three-day-event in Christchurch Meadows will see Jim Bob from Carter USM and synth pop duo Blancmange on the bill in the Purple Turtle tent tonight.

    Maxi Jazz from Faithless is also bringing his new band the E-Type Boys to the festival later, and local acts include Tiny Giant and Nate Simpson.

    Bournemouth footballer Jermain Defoe was among thousands of mourners to line the streets of Bradley Lowery's home town for his funeral.

    The six-year-old Sunderland fan, from Blackhall Colliery, County Durham, died on Friday following a cancer fight.

    The Thames Traditional Boat Rally is under way at Fawley Meadows in Henley.

    It was first held at in 1978 and celebrates classic boats.

    Among the vessels on display is the Gloriana, the royal rowbarge. In 2012 it travelled down the Thames during the the Diamond Jubilee Pageant.

    Police are appealing for witnesses following a crash in Weymouth that has left an elderly man with life-threatening injuries.

    At around 17:40 BST yesterday a silver Vauxhall Astra hit the 89-year-old pedestrian at the junction of Preston Beach Road and Bowleaze Coveway.

    The man was taken to Dorset County Hospital for treatment and the road was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident. It reopened at 21:40.

    The driver of the car – a 28-year-old man from Weymouth – and his front seat passenger were uninjured.

    Police investigating the theft of almost £3,000 worth of Lego from toy shops have arrested two people.

    Four people were reported to have pushed three trolleys containing more than £1,350 worth of Lego out of a Toys R Us store in Poole on 15 May.

    Similar thefts were also reported at Smyths Toy Superstore in Bournemouth and a Tesco store in Poole.

    A man from Bournemouth and a woman from Southampton, both aged 38, have been arrested on suspicion of theft.

    They have been released while investigations continue.

    Andrew Bridge, 22, from Farnham in Surrey, James Male, 22, from Southampton, Steve Warren, 52, and Paul Goslin, 56, both from Somerset, had been returning the 40ft (12m) vessel to Southampton from Antigua Sailing Week when it capsized.

    The US Coastguard was criticised for calling off its search for the stricken vessel after two days, but it was restarted after intervention by the British government.

    The vessel was eventually found with the life raft but no sign of the four men. Their bodies have never been found.

    A jury considering manslaughter charges against a Southampton charter boat company director following the deaths of four men in a yacht capsize has been discharged after failing to reach verdicts.

    Douglas Innes, director of Stormforce Coaching Limited had denied the charges.

    Earlier, Mr Innes and the company were found guilty of failing to ensure the safe operation of the yacht Cheeki Rafiki, under the Merchant Shipping Act.

    Prosecutor Nigel Lickley QC said the Crown would seek a retrial on the four manslaughter charges.
