Two hedgehogs suffered a "painful and cruel death" after being set on fire deliberately on a school playing field, police have said.
The animals were discovered in a box following the "small" blaze at Mudeford Junior School, Christchurch.
Dorset Police said it was likely the spiny creatures would have been alive when they were set alight.
Officers are appealing for witnesses to the fire which happened on 8 July when the school was closed.

Engineers are working to repair a water main which serves 20,000 homes in an area around Chandlers Ford north of Southampton.
John Keble Church Of England Primary School, in Hursley, and Ampfield C of E Primary School in Knapp Lane, Ampfield, announced they would be closed today because of a lack of water.
Southern Water said it first became aware of a burst affecting properties in the Chandlers Ford, Otterbourne and Chilworth areas at about 01:00.
It said it is bringing in bottled water supplies and tankers while work continues.

AFC Bournemouth has announced it's planning to build a new stadium on land at Kings' Park, alongside the current ground.
It's preferred site is where the athletics stadium and the club's existing training pitches are located.
A planning application is expected to be submitted next year and a feasibility study will look at a new site for the athletics track. It's hoped work would be complete in three years.
