    A 6,000-home development near Fareham has moved forward, with the sale of nearly 40% of the land to Buckland Development Limited.

    The firm now controls 90% of the land needed for Welborne Garden Village.

    Fareham council leader Sean Woodward said the remaining land could be acquired through compulsory purchase orders, although planning approval was still a long way off.

    He said: "The purchase of Dean Farm is a big step which brings Welborne forward sooner."

    A scheme to attract businesses to occupy shops in Abingdon is being launched by Vale of White Horse council.

    The project will see the authority work with landlords to identify and overcome issues that may prevent retailers from moving into empty shops, particularly in Bath Street, Stert Street and High Street, and will work to attract pop-up shops.

    A Dorset man who befriended a 98-year-old woman has been jailed for stealing £170,000 of her savings.

    Russell Joy, 45, of High Street, Shapwick, set up direct debits and cashed bonds on behalf of Mary Brady from Broadstone.

    He pleaded guilty at Bournemouth Crown Court to six counts of fraud by abuse of position.

    Joy was jailed for five years and one month and will be subject to action under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

  7. Man pleads not guilty to raping woman near Oxford nightclubpublished at 17:23

    A man has denied raping a woman after she left a nightclub in Oxford.

    Suranga Wijethunga, 32, of Speedwell Street, Oxford, was charged with rape and causing a woman to engage in sexual activity without consent.

    He denied both charges at Oxford Crown Court and his trial has been scheduled for 12 February.

    Police said the attack happened in an alleyway near Atik on Park End Street at about 02:00 on 17 June. Mr Suranga was released on bail.

    A wildlife park where an escaped wolf was shot dead has reported threats made against staff to the police.

    Cotswold Wildlife Park was criticised on social media after the three-year-old female animal, named Ember, was killed on 21 July.

    It was found outside the perimeter fence and the park's managing director said staff were too far away to tranquilise the Eurasian wolf.

    Police said park staff have reported threatening voicemails and emails.

    Plans for a new station in Reading have won £2.5m government funding.

    Green Park, in the south of the town, is one of five to benefit from the New Stations Fund.

    It will be on the Reading to Basingstoke line and will be service by a half-hourly service in each direction.

    A cyclist has been filmed by a member of the public attacking the occupants of a car with his mud guard during a fight in the middle of the road.

    The footage shot in Bath Road, Slough, shows a fracas between three men - one of whom appears to wield a golf club - and ending with a passer-by intervening.

    The man who took the footage asked to remain anonymous and said it was unclear why the fight started. He said the incident happened at about 12:30 BST on Thursday.

    Thames Valley Police, which has been shown the video by the BBC, said the incident was not being investigated as it had not been reported.

    The rail line between Bournemouth and Weymouth remains closed after a person was hit by a train, external between Wareham and Poole.

    South West Trains apologised said replacement buses and taxis would be provided but they too were being delayed by a collision on the A354.

    The incident comes as thousands of revellers travel to Wareham and Wool for the Camp Bestival festival.

    Dorset History Centre has received a £5,000 grant to digitise a photography archive, capturing the social history of Weymouth between 1953 and 1983.

    The 7,000 packets of negatives of the Herbert Collection is irreversibly deteriorating and must be digitised before it is lost.

    The grant by TownsWeb Archiving will preserve the photographs by Graham Herbert for future generations.

    Public toilets in Pangbourne, closed for more than two years, will re-open later this year.

    The loos on Station Road were shut in May 2015 when West Berkshire Council decided not to run them.

    But a community campaign group has raised the money to re-open them in September.

    Men are more likely to become carers in older age and usually as a result of caring for their partners, according to a study by Bournemouth University.

    Its figures show more than 50,000 over-85s are now carers.

    Researchers identified a "hidden population" of male carers and highlighted isolation, depression and physical health problems.

  20. Cheap meat appeal after sheep carcasses foundpublished at 13:43 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

    The carcasses of 11 sheep have been found on a farm in Barford St John, near Banbury, external.

    The animals were discovered between 30 June and 24 July by the landowner whose sheep had gone missing.

    Thames Valley Police appealed for witnesses or anyone who had been offered cheap lamb to get in touch.

    PC Suzanne Goodman said: "I would advise anyone to report this to the police and not buy or eat such meat as there could be a health risk."
