    Two landlords have been fined a total of nearly £8,000 after failing to properly manage their rented properties in Slough.

    Inspection teams found a property in the High Street, deemed to be a "risk to the health and safety of its occupants", had not been improved, despite an improvement notice.

    Slough Borough Council said the landlord was fined and ordered to pay costs totalling £5,170.

    The owner of a house in Farm Crescent was also fined and ordered to pay costs totalling £2,812 after the kitchen was left unusable because of a leaking shower.

  2. Three schools to offer 450 extra placespublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

    Hundreds of new secondary school places are being created in the borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

    Tenders to expand three schools were confirmed by the council last night:

    • Charter School – £3,343,199 to provide 210 more places with a new block of 11 general classrooms, two science labs and a dining room extension.
    • Cox Green School (pictured) – £3,681,388 to provide 210 more places with a new block of nine general classrooms, a kitchen/dining room, remodelled classrooms, including science labs.
    • Newlands Girls’ School – £776,000 to provide 30 more places including three extra teaching spaces, including one in a courtyard.

    The increased intake will begin in September 2018.

    Schemes are already under way to expand capacity at four other schools in the borough.

    A four-year-old girl is in hospital with a broken leg after an alleged hit-and-run in Southampton.

    A silver Ford Focus was involved in the crash in Denzil Avenue at 19:50 on Thursday.

    Police said they had recovered the car and have appealed for witnesses.

  5. Couple injured in New Forest cow attackpublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

    Dog owners in the New Forest have been warned to be vigilant when walking on Hale Purlieu, near Fordingbridge, after a couple were injured by a cow.

    New Forest Dog Owners Group said a man suffered a broken arm and shoulder when the black cow charged twice without warning.

    Agister Andrew Napthine advised people to let dogs go in the event of a cow attack.

  7. Sixth arrest over 'knife fight' in housepublished at 10:53 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

    A sixth person has been arrested over an alleged assault in Portland on Saturday.

    Several men were reported to have entered a house in Fortuneswell and threatened the occupants with a knife before a fight ensued.

    A 24-year-old man from London has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

    Two men, aged 43 and 36, a woman, aged 29, and a 17-year-old boy were previously arrested on suspicion of assault.

    A 23-year-old man was also held on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

    All have been released while investigations continue.

    L'Orage is one of 100 boats that survived Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of British and French Allied troops from Northern France in 1940.

  11. Southern Health NHS trust 'making progress'published at 09:02 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

    An NHS trust criticised for not properly investigating the deaths of hundreds of patients is learning from its past mistakes, according to a health watchdog.

    The Care Quality Commission (CQC) said Southern Health was getting better at investigating incidents, but added there was still much to do.

    Issues at the trust came to light after 18-year-old Connor Sparrowhawk drowned in a bath at an Oxford facility.

    A report, which was leaked to the BBC in 2015, showed that of the 722 unexpected deaths at the trust between 2011 and 2015, only 272 were investigated.

    The trust welcomed the CQC's findings.

    Nurses and supporters gathered in Southampton city centre last night for a candle-lit demonstration against the government's 1% pay cap on staff.

    The protest at the city's Bargate claimed poor wages, staff shortages, and relentless pressure is creating a "perfect storm" in healthcare services.

    The Government says it's committed to ensuring nurses can "continue to deliver world-class patient care."
