The planned closure of a care centre has been delayed by Southampton City Council.

Labour leader Simon Letts said in a debate at full council that the decision to close the Kentish Road respite centre would be looked at again after a new business case is put together.

A petition with 2,223 signatures was presented to the council by service users, carers and families.

Three people who use the service threw paper cash at councillors, and wore T-shirts saying "I am worth £300,000 a year".

The council has said it would save £300,000 annually by closing the service, which was planned for October 31.

A vote was taken on delaying the closure among other recommendations, including a "reassessment of the financial business case".

Opposition councillors said the business case used to calculate potential savings was two years out of date, and Mr Letts agreed.
