Caroline and Geoffrey Robinson, from Fair Oak in Eastleigh, are waiting for their son Joshua, 24, who is an avionics killick.

His job will be to catch the planes as they land on the flight deck - when they arrive that is...

His thoughts on the ship are it's "massive with a lot of ladders", so his mum says!

  2. Feeding HMS Queen Elizabethpublished at 09:02 British Summer Time 16 August 2017

Feeding the crew of Britain's biggest warship is quite a task - 45 days worth of food are kept in the ship's stores.

The entire ship's company of 700 can be served a meal within 90 minutes - or 45 minutes when at action station.

There are more than 60 catering staff on board and the ship has its own bakery, which can produce 1,000 loaves of bread per day.

A typical deployment would sail with 66,000 sausages, 28,800 rashers of bacon, 64,800 eggs and 12,000 tins of beans.

The sheer size of HMS Queen Elizabeth makes the hundreds of people on the dockside look like ants.

There were a few tears as family and friends of the crew, who have been waiting patiently since early morning, welcomed the new aircraft carrier home.

Malcolm said: "It's just been incredible to be here today, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity."

Ian added: "It was electric, definitely worth getting up early for. My Uncle was in the navy so this has made me think of him and how much he would have loved it too."

HMS Queen Elizabeth’s home berth, Sheer Jetty, has been in use since the 1600s

The carrier will sit opposite HMS Victory, the world’s oldest commissioned warship.

New navigational beacons have been installed in Portsmouth Harbour to guide the Queen Elizabeth Class in and out of their home port and specialist dredging vessels have removed 3,200,000 cubic metres of sediment - the equivalent to 1,280 Olympic swimming pools.
