    The Royal Navy's new £3bn aircraft carrier is set to sail out of Portsmouth for the first time.

    HMS Queen Elizabeth was unable to leave port last week because of bad weather and ongoing engineering work.

    It is currently maneuvering its way out of port for a second series of sea trials.

    A fresh campaign has been launched to build a bypass for a Dorset village blighted by heavy traffic.

    Plans to re-route the A35 around Chideock were approved in the early 1990s, but the scheme was shelved when the government withdrew funding.

    Villagers are resurrecting their campaign in a bid to get the project included in Highways England's funding plans for 2020 to 2025.

    But some fear the loss of passing trade could "kill the village".

    The family of a man who was knocked down and killed by an armed police reponse vehicle has accused a police disciplinary panel of secrecy, as a misconduct inquiry began over the actions of two officers.

    Aston McLean Williams was hit by the car in Reading in August 2014 shortly after one officer used pepper spray on him, an inquiry report said.

    The victim's family has not been allowed to attend the hearing in Kidlington, near Oxford, and is watching on a TV screen at Ascot police station.

    His mother Janet told the panel chairman: "This is not public. If it was being held in public, we would be there."

    Another family member called out, "What are you whispering about?", as the panel discussed an application to extend anonymity to all officers involved.

    The chairman, John Barrett, threatened to exclude the family from the screening room if there were any further interruptions.

    A man was been charged with attempted murder and having an imitation firearm after a man was shot with a suspected BB gun in Basingstoke.

    Police previously said a car driver was shot in the face and back when he refused to give a lift to two unknown men who approached him in the street.

    The 28-year-old victim was later released from hospital.

    A 21-year-old Basingstoke man is due in court today, following the incident in Stag Hill at about 08:30 BST on Saturday.

    A second Basingstoke man, aged 23, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

    Slough police have seized a Lamborghini after it was "driving anti-socially" in the town.

    The force tweeted twice, once with the vehicle pulled over, and another which the supercar being lifted on to a tow truck.

    An NHS trust is to replace an "unfit" patient appointment database 17 months after it was linked to a man's death.

    The "scandalous" spreadsheet system contributed to Thomas Higgins' death at his home on the Isle of Wight, the island's coroner said in June 2016.

    She said all patients on the register were "at risk" because the system lost appointments and often collapsed.

    The Isle of Wight NHS Trust said the new database, TPP SystmOne, will come into operation on 29 November.

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to murder a car driver, who was shot with a suspected BB gun.

    The 28-year-old victim was approaching his vehicle in Stag Hill, Basingstoke, at about 08:30 BST on Saturday, when two unknown men asked him for a lift, police said.

    When he refused, he was shot in the face and back. He has since been released from hospital.

    A 21-year-old man from Basingstoke has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

    A man has been charged with assault after a dog walker was "repeatedly punched in the face" in Oxford.

    The victim, a 53-year-old man, suffered cuts and a broken nose in the attack in the recreation ground off Oxford Road in Littlemore on 3 June.

    A 56-year-old Oxford man is to due to appear before the city's magistrates tomorrow.

  11. Pedestrian seriously hurt in 'hit-and-run' collisionpublished at 09:24 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2017

    A pedestrian has been seriously injured in a collision with a vehicle which failed to stop.

    The 48-year-old was hit at about 02:12 yesterday on the A4 Bath Road, Kintbury crossroads in Hungerford, police said.

    He was taken to hospital with serious head, shoulder and back injuries.

    Police said the vehicle, possibly a dark-coloured hatchback, is likely to have been damaged in the crash.

    The £3bn aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth will leave Portsmouth this afternoon, the Royal Navy has confirmed.

    The ship's departure for sea trials was delayed because of the weather and ongoing engineering work, its operator said last week.

    At least six gravestones were destroyed when a suspected stolen car careered into a churchyard.

    The silver Vauxhall Astra left the road and ploughed into Lytchett Minster parish cemetery shortly after 10:00 on Saturday.

    Police said a 16-year-old girl and two men, aged 20 and 21 from Poole, were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and driving offences.

    The girl was later de-arrested and is assisting officers voluntarily.
