The driver of a police armed response vehicle that knocked down and killed a man fleeing a burglary said he lost sight of him briefly because a police car blocked his view.

A misconduct hearing was told Aston McLean Williams died after the vehicle was used as a "mobile barrier".

The Thames Valley Police officer, referred to as "N", told the hearing he had not seen fellow officers in the road because he was concentrating on Mr Williams.

Officer N said the situation had been “fluid” and he was driving to minimise the risk to fellow officers and members of the public.

The majority of questions posed by relatives of Mr Williams were ruled as falling outside the hearing or already answered, however, N did say he had used a similar manoeuvre on previous occasions.

A second officer who is also facing misconduct charges, referred to as "P", is now giving evidence.

A few years ago, Trust Me I'm a Doctor did an experiment with Surrey University, asking volunteers to cut down on their sleep by an hour a night for a week.

Dr Simon Archer, who helped run the experiment, found that getting an hour's less sleep a night affected the activity of a wide range of his volunteers' genes.

So the negative effects on our bodies of sleep deprivation are clear - but what effect does lack of sleep have on our mental health?

To find out Trust Me teamed up with sleep scientists at the University of Oxford to run an experiment.

Aston McLean WilliamsImage source, Family handout

The driver of a police armed response vehicle that knocked down and killed a man fleeing a burglary scene said he made the decision “in an instant” to drive after him.

Aston McLean Williams (pictured) died in Wokingham Road, Reading, after a PC used an armed response vehicle as a "mobile barrier".

The officer, known only as N, said Mr Williams had been running on the pavement and he had been driving on the opposite side of the road.

He added: "There was a sudden change in the subject’s direction towards my vehicle.

"Someone was coming into my peripheral vision and I began to apply the foot brake. I also steered sharply left. There was a blur of movement where I saw a figure begin to fall."

Asked if he had driven dangerously he replied: "No".

His response prompted gasps from Mr Williams's family, with one calling out "you killed him".

The hearing, which is considering gross misconduct charges against two officers, continues.
