  2. Baby died 'after ambulance toilet break'published at 13:54 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2017

A series of delays, including an ambulance crew's detour for a toilet break, played a major part in the death of a newborn baby, a coroner has said.

Rafe Angelo died from oxygen starvation shortly after being delivered at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, in September 2014.

The inquest heard an ambulance crew, which had not been told the call was "time critical", made a 13-minute detour for a toilet break before collecting pregnant Kelly Angelo to take her to hospital.

On arrival, she was taken to the wrong door and there were no midwives or doctors to meet her.

In a narrative verdict, Coroner Karen Harrold said the delays were a "critical system failure".

Christchurch residents are to be given their say on plans to merge Dorset's nine councils into two new unitary authorities.

Secretary of State Sajid Javid said he was "minded to" approve the plan despite opposition from three councils.

Christchurch Borough Council previously postponed a postal referendum when the general election was called in May.

Leader David Flagg said there was "a general feeling" that the borough's residents were opposed to a new unitary authority with Bournemouth and Poole.

  6. Isle of Wight to get 'ultrafast' broadbandpublished at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2017

More than 50,000 homes and firms on the Isle of Wight could have "ultrafast" broadband by 2022 following a £35m investment.

WightFibre plans to build the network using full-fibre network technology which it says will give speeds of one gigabit per second (gbps).

The operator said the money had come in part from the government Digital Infrastructure Investment Fund.

It said the plans would create a "Gigabit Island".

The technology is known as full-fibre because it takes high-speed cables directly to properties.

Much of the existing fibre services in the UK connect the fast cables to roadside cabinets and then use older, slower copper for the final link to homes and businesses.

"I appreciate that this may take some organising on your part. Please come and collect your child/children from their teams as soon as you can."

An overnight power fault has left customers in parts of Wokingham and Twyford without water.

    Supplies have been disrupted in RG4, RG5, RG6, RG9 and RG10 postcodes.

Thames Water said tankers were pumping water into the network and it was delivering bottled water to vulnerable customers.

Bottled water is also being made available for collection at Hare Hatch Garden Centre, Seven Sisters in Star Lane and Woodley Airfield Community Centre.

A spokeswoman said: "Despite our best efforts to maintain supplies, including transferring water from other regions, there is currently less water than normal flowing into our pipes in the area."

Plans to merge Dorset's nine councils into two new unitary authorities could still be challenged - despite the Secretary of State Sajid Javid saying he was minded to approve the scheme.

Christchurch MP Chris Chope says he will hold the government to its promise not to abolish any council against its will.

Christchurch Borough Council said it would go ahead with a referendum on the issue.

Purbeck council leader Gary Suttle said their position has not changed since the scheme was rejected by councillors earlier this year.

Secretary of State Sajid Javid said he is satisfied the financial case for merging has been made but that Parliament will have the final say in the New Year.

A request to ban buses from a major street in Oxford city centre has been declined by the Secretary of State for Transport.

It was submitted due to safety concerns about more people using Queen Street because of the Westgate Oxford shopping centre opening.

But the Department for Transport has declined Oxfordshire County Council's request due to a lack of evidence.

More data will now be gathered by the council in 2018.
