    New warning signs have been installed at a level crossing following four near misses at the site since May.

    The Hatches level crossing, between Frimley Green, in Surrey, and Farnborough North railway station, in Hampshire, is the second highest risk footpath crossing on the South Western Railway network.

    Users have to decide for themselves whether it is safe to cross.

    Level crossing manager Kathy Welch urged people, specifically school children, to take off their headphones or put their phones in their pockets.

    Christchurch Borough Council will not be pursuing rejoining Hampshire as an alternative to the Dorset councils merger plan.

    Leader David Flagg said: “Following a meeting with colleagues at Hampshire County Council it has become clear that the option of Christchurch rejoining Hampshire is not something that they can support.

    “I would like to thank both officers and members at the county council for taking the time to meet with us.”

    Christchurch Borough Council will now hold a local poll to ask residents if they support Christchurch becoming part of a new unitary council with Bournemouth and Poole.

    An extraordinary full council meeting is expected to be held on 2 January to discuss the results of the poll.

    A former head of business studies at a secondary school has been jailed for dealing drugs to students.

    Rachel Ryan, 41, who admitted importing and selling tranquilisers, offered one pupil at Banbury Academy (pictured) a discount for buying more than 100 tablets, police said.

    She admitted dealing diazepam, alprazolam and nitrazepam.

    Ryan, from Swansea, admitted seven drugs offences and was jailed for 15 months at Oxford Crown Court on Friday.

    Two men have been arrested after a man suffered a severed neck artery during a stabbing attack.

    The 29-year-old victim was attacked outside the Encore pub in Commercial Road, Southampton, shortly after midnight on 22 July.

    The two men, aged 27 and 35 and from London, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

    A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after a 17-year-old girl was raped in a Sherborne street.

    It happened in Bristol Road at about 02:20 GMT. A public garden and homes have since been cordoned off by police.

    The cordon runs from Bristol Road, at its junction with the A30 at Cold Harbour, and Priestlands Lane.

    The boy, from Sherborne, has been arrested on suspicion of rape and is currently assisting officers, Dorset Police said.

    Major UK wholesaler Palmer and Harvey (P&H), which has a branch in Fareham, has gone into administration following failed rescue talks.

    Administrators at PwC have said 2,500 jobs will be lost with immediate effect.

    The firm had been in takeover talks with private equity firm Carlyle, but these fell through.

    P&H, which is the UK's largest tobacco supplier, had been struggling with debts and owed substantial sums to key suppliers.

    People living and working in Bournemouth are being asked if they want to see busking banned in the town centre.

    The council is considering introducing public spaces protection orders after receiving complaints from businesses, residents and visitors about unreasonable behaviour.

    A petition against the proposals has gained more than 1,000 signatures.

    A council leader has resigned following claims he forwarded a pornographic video to colleagues.

    Slough Borough Council chief Sohail Munawar stepped down on Tuesday night as he told how the episode had "left its mark" on him and his family.

    Mr Munawar was suspended by the Labour Party earlier this month after complaints from fellow councillors.

    James Swindlehurst, a Labour councillor, was voted in as the new leader of the local authority.

    Railway lines closed in the 1960s could be reopened if they boost the economy, the government has said.

    The plan forms part of a wider rail strategy, external under which the government will consider splitting up two of the biggest train operators.

    The move would affect Great Western and GTR, which comprises Southern, Thameslink and Great Northern.

    The government also plans to devolve running the track and train services to local companies.
