  2. Safety concerns over Isle of Wight fire fighter shift patternspublished at 08:39 British Summer Time 11 October 2018

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has described the Isle of Wight council's plans to change firefighters' shift patterns as detrimental to public safety.

The council says a new model could improve efficiency by increasing coverage at the busiest times, and would guarantee a minimum of 12 immediately available firefighters for 12 hours a day, every day.

The FBU say the changes are about saving money with no regard to public safety.

"While I recognise the FBU's concerns, I'm responsible for the safety of our firefighters and I will not put them at any increased risk," said Howard Watts, the Island's most senior fire officer.

"This move will not change our policy on the number of firefighters on fire engines."

As well as its benefits to physical fitness, for many people running is about mental wellbeing too.

During World Mental Health Week, England Athletics is working to inspire non-runners to dig out their trainers and get moving.

Mark Lygo, from Oxford, suffered mild depression and said running had saved him.

"I've had what I call black cloud days when I just wanted to draw the curtains and make every excuse not to do anything. But the important thing is just to get out and keep up the exercise.

    More on this story

"There are times when it does you good to get out on your own and clear your head and there are other times when you need to be with positive like-minded people and conversations become therapeutic.

"That feel-good factor once you’ve gone out for a run is a good feeling.

"I’d like to think the last couple of years of depression, I’m on the up, and that is down to exercise, laughter and positive friends."

    Balfour Beatty train driver

Network Rail has warned that train delays caused by leaves on the track could be worse than usual this autumn.

The firm has cut back on the number of line-side trees it fells, pending a government review of concerns for wildlife.

Train wheels can crush leaves into a pulp, making the track dangerously slippery.

James Crook from Network Rail said: "The fact that we haven't been able to cut back as much vegetation as we normally would... could well cause an impact."

Christ the King CollegeImage source, Peter Langdown

An Isle of Wight college, which ran up a £2.7m overdraft in 2017, has been rated inadequate by OFSTED school inspectors.

Christ the King College in Newport has a "disruptive" minority of pupils and a "worrying" amount of bullying, although new leaders have "halted the school's decline", the OFSTED report said, external.

In December, Isle of Wight Council said the school's debt, arising from an "ill-judged" lease agreement, was "one of the biggest overdrafts in the educational system".

Former OFSTED chairman David Hoare was criticised in 2016 for calling the Isle of Wight a "ghetto" because of the poor performance of seven schools.
