A man who used the home of a "vulnerable person" to deal drugs in Newbury has been jailed for two years.

Daniel Bari, 19, of Stumpacre, Peterborough, pleaded guilty to two Class A drug charges during a hearing at Reading Crown Court on 1 October.

Officers found packages equating to 72 wraps of cocaine and 46 wraps of heroin in a home he was found in.

He was first stopped by officers in the company of someone police described as "vulnerable".

When officers later visited the home of the vulnerable person, they found Bari there, and after being placed on what the force said was "constant watch", three packages of drugs were discovered.

After entering a guilty plea to both counts, Bari was sentenced to two years and four months in prison and ordered to forfeit his phone and £346 in cash.

The Lib Dems retook control of the city council despite the Conservatives being the largest party following elections in May.

With the support of the five Labour members, the Lib Dems won the leadership vote by 21 votes to 20.

With Ms Brent taking the Lib Dem whip, it leaves both the Conservatives and Lib Dems with 17 seats on the council.

Police trying to encourage people to support a merger of Devon and Cornwall Police with Dorset Police carried out less consultation in Cornwall than they did in the other two counties.

Documents that will go before the Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Panel this week show that the police attended 37 public events and meetings in Devon between June and September, 22 in Dorset but just nine in Cornwall.

The figures have been released following widespread criticism in Cornwall over the lack of consultation over the proposed merger and the lack of detail which has been provided about the plans.

The documents also detail the results of a survey, which show a stark difference between how people in Cornwall responded compared to those in Devon and Dorset.

The online survey was completed by 2,080 people in Cornwall and many fewer agreed or strongly agreed with the statement: "As the police forces already work closely together, a merger seems like the next logical step."

    Across the counties it was:

    • Dorset - 48%
    • Devon - 36%
    • Cornwall 16%

Going ahead with the merger will depend on whether the forces' chief constables and commissioners decide to submit a business case to the Home Office for consideration.

However, last week that decision was delayed after the Devon and Cornwall Police crime commissioner said she was unlikely to support the merger.

The Road Haulage Association is calling for the A34 between Hampshire and Oxfordshire to be widened.

The group which represents road transport and freight operators says it's the biggest road issue affecting businesses and curtailing economic development.

Regional Operations Manager Rhys Williams said an extra lane on some hilly stretches would be useful.

Crawler lanes will allow slower moving traffic to keep going and the faster-moving traffic to free flow past, not causing drivers to be frustrated by slower traffic. It's not just lorries - the A34 passes through rural areas where we have a lot of tractors and agricultural vehicles.

  17. Winchester celebrates Diver Billpublished at 09:35 British Summer Time 3 October 2018

The heroic diver who secured Winchester Cathedral's foundations a century ago will be celebrated in a new exhibition.

The cathedral had been in imminent danger of collapse at the start of the last century as it was sinking slowly into the peaty ground.

Known as 'Diver Bill', Wiliam Walker was employed to descend into the murky waters of 235 pits, each about 6m (20ft) deep, to temporarily shore up the walls by putting concrete underneath them.

He worked from 1906 until 1911 supporting the cathedral using more than 25,000 bags of concrete, 115,000 concrete blocks and 900,000 bricks.
