A man is due in court after a vehicle allegedly narrowly missed hitting two adults and a child who were walking on a pavement in Dorset.

The Nissan Navara was driven from South Street into Trinity Lane in Wareham, in what was reported to be a careless manner, at about 18:10 GMT on 6 April, police said.

Jamie Leyland, 27, of Wareham, has been issued with a postal requisition for an offence of driving without due care and attention, and is due at Weymouth Magistrates’ Court on 23 October.

The leader of Portsmouth City Council has pledged to keep fighting for the city's role in defence.

Speaking at full council on Tuesday, Gerald Vernon-Jackson said he believed there was still hope new Type 26 frigates could be based at the city's naval base, despite an announcement last week that the ships would go to Plymouth.

"I don't think this needs to be a final decision," he said.

"We know that it makes economical sense for the government to use our base, not just to work on their maintenance but as their home."

Labour councillors proposed an amendment to Mr Vernon-Jackson's motion, asking that Portsmouth only be considered as a maintenance site rather than the ships' base.

However, they were outvoted. Councillors then unanimously agreed to lobby the government to make Portsmouth the base of the frigates.

In the early hours of Saturday 19th August 2018, a gang attempted to pull a cashpoint machine from a listed building in Beaminster Square using a stolen tractor and Land Rover. The raid failed, but significant structural damage was caused to the building on Fleet Street. Small businesses are concerned that their trade has suffered since the incident and are calling for urgent action to speed up repair work to improve traffic issues. Plastic recycling banks are to be removed from Southampton.

The city council said it had made the decision to remove the 13 banks, external as the company that provides them is facing ongoing difficulties in disposing of the materials that are collected.

This is due to changes in the plastic recycling market, with material processors currently not accepting pots, tubs and trays, which make up the majority of the collections, the authority said.

This is a national issue affecting other local authorities around the country.

Services have been cancelled after 500m of overhead cables were torn down by a Hitachi train being tested.

Dan Panes, head of communications at GWR, said he expected services to be delayed "most of today at the very least".

He added: "It’s a big bit of work that Network Rail have to do to get these lines back up.

"Our focus is on today making sure our trains and our crew are in the right place so we can start tomorrow morning operating.

“What we are aware of at the moment, it’s not one of our trains. It looks like a train being operated by Hitachi, a Class 802 train, was probably the first train to be caught up in all of this last night."
