  1. Paddington station: 'New Hitachi train on test responsible for disruption'published at 10:02 British Summer Time 17 October 2018

    A new class 802 Hitachi train, on test, ripped into the overhead wires at Hanwell in west London.

    It has torn down 500m of power cables.

    It would be a surprise if Network Rail can get that repaired in less than a day, and it might well be longer.

    The train, running overnight, was driven by GB Railfreight, which provides test drivers. It will eventually be handed to Great Western but is not theirs at present.

  4. Arrested man released after 'murder bid' attack outside Sandown pubpublished at 09:45 British Summer Time 17 October 2018

    A man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following an attack outside a pub on the Isle of Wight has been released from custody.

    A 49-year-old man suffered a life-threatening head injury during an assault outside The Old Comical in St John's Road, Sandown, on 17 September.

    A 24-year-old man, from Sandown, who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder has been released under investigation.

    A 31-year-old man who was also arrested has been released with no further action.

    Passengers are facing major disruption due to damage at one of London's busiest railway stations.

    Network Rail said all Great Western Railway (GWR) trains between Paddington and Slough have been cancelled until at least midday after overhead electric cables were damaged at Ealing on Tuesday night.

    Trains between Paddington and Heathrow airport are also not running.

    Services are likely to be affected all day, Network Rail said.

  14. Trio to appear in court after bar 'glassing'published at 18:09 British Summer Time 16 October 2018

    Three people are due to appear at court in connection with a reported affray after a man was reportedly glassed and a woman punched in a Bournemouth bar.

    Dorset Police say the alleged attack, at Felson’s Bar on Old Christchurch Road at around 23:40 BST on 26 March, caused a man to have a small bleed on the brain, which was not life threatening. The woman suffered a facial injury.

    A 22-year-old Bournemouth woman, a 30-year-old man from Manchester and a 22-year-old Derbyshire woman have been issued with a postal notice to appear at Poole Magistrates’ Court on 26 October 2018 charged with affray, assaulting a police constable, criminal damage and possessing a class B drug. A 28-year-old man from Cheshire who was arrested on suspicion of affray in connection with the incident has now been released without charge.

  19. Life sentence for Sherborne armed robberpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 16 October 2018

    A man who robbed a convenience store while brandishing a knife has been given a life sentence.

    Dion Kevin Levy, 40, admitted a charge of robbery and possessing a bladed article in a public place at Taunton Crown Court on Monday 8 October 2018 after stealing £757.65 from the Spar Store in Yetminster.

    He jumped over the counter and was seen by a member of staff with a knife, before demanding money and grabbed the till drawer before leaving the shop.

    Levy was arrested by officers from Avon and Somerset Police in Yeovil the following day.

    He was also sentenced for a further robbery and an offence of possessing a firearm with intent relating to an incident at Martock Post Office in Somerset on 4 January 2018 and was handed a life sentence.

    Levy was told he would have to serve a minimum jail term of seven years before being eligible for parole.

  20. M40 junctions closed after 'serious accident'published at 15:54 British Summer Time 16 October 2018

    Thames Valley Police have said they are dealing with a "serious collision" on the northbound carriage of the M40, on a junction close to east Oxford.

    The force have closed the motorway in both directions as a result of the incident.

    It comes a day after another serious crash in which three people died.
