Thames Valley Police said, external at about 01:30 a woman in her 20s caught a taxi from Park End Street in Oxford.
During the journey she fell asleep, but woke up at about 01:45 to find the driver undoing her trousers. He then sexually assaulted her.
The victim got out of the taxi near West St Helen Street, Abingdon, and the driver followed her for a short distance, before walking off after she approached a member of the public.
The driver is described as an Asian male with short black hair and stubble.
This week Anna Burns was named the winner of this year's Man Booker Prize, becoming the first author from Northern Ireland to triumph.
Milkman beat competition from Everything Under by Oxford's Daisy Johnson - who, at 27, was the youngest nominee in Man Booker history.
Daisy is still in good spirits though, and has since tweeted that she's working on her new book.

Twenty-four thousand smuggled cigarettes were seized in Witney, Oxfordshire, yesterday.
Trading Standards and Thames Valley Police officers raided a property in Highworth Place with sniffer dogs and found the suspected counterfeit cigarettes which have a market value of £12,000.
Jody Kerman, Oxfordshire County Council’s operations manager for trading standards, said: "Illegal tobacco poses an additional threat to our children and communities, because it is sold at pocket money prices by criminals who may not be interested in asking for proof of age.
"We’re committed to helping people live safe, healthy lives; cracking down on the illegal tobacco trade is one of our top priorities."
Simon Colley was targeted online after avoiding jail for kicking a wreath at a cenotaph.

The incident on Southwick Hill Road was reported to Hampshire fire and rescue shortly after midday.

Paul Bytheway, chief operating officer at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "Mains power to parts of the Queen Alexandra Hospital site was lost shortly after noon today."
He added: "We instigated our incident response plan and normal power has been restored in all patient areas in the hospital."
The car, which was in a crash that killed three, was reported to police five days earlier, it emerges.

A masked man entered the Co-op on Beaufoy Close at around 06:10 and threatened and assaulted a member of staff and then made off with a quantity of cash.
The victim sustained minor injuries during the incident, but did not require hospital treatment.
"This must have been a very distressing incident for the member of staff involved and I can assure members of the public that a full investigation has been launched to identify the man responsible," said Detective Sergeant Tom Hall of Dorset Police.
