  3. Island's leader loses council seat to Green rivalpublished at 18:21 British Summer Time 7 May 2021

Early indications suggest the leader of Isle of Wight Council has lost his seat in the island's elections.

Votes are still to be confirmed but Conservative leader Dave Stewart believes he has been ousted as ward councillor for Chale, Niton and Whitwell by his Green Party rival Claire Critchison.

Mr Stewart, who has been leader for four years, said: "I think it was always close because there were only two candidates – myself and the Green candidate.

"That’s the democratic process and, genuinely, I wish well to the person who’s replaced me."

The results of the island's elections have not yet been announced while some postal votes are checked, but Mr Stewart said he did not believe it would be enough to alter the outcome.

He said, despite losing his seat, he was hopeful the Conservatives would retain control of the council.
