    Passenger sailings on the Hythe Ferry are being suspended "for the foreseeable future" amid the move to tier four restrictions its operator has announced.

    All of the county will be moved into tier four from Boxing Day, with the exception of the New Forest.

    The service between Town Quay, Southampton and Hythe Pier will stop running this evening.

    In a post on its Facebook page, operator Blue Funnel Ferries Ltd said: "We will be monitoring government announcements. Stay safe everyone and have a good Christmas.

    "Let's hope for a better 2021."

    Sea services between Portsmouth, France and Spain are resuming.

    France shut its border for 48 hours on Sunday over the UK's new virus variant and new entry rules for travellers from the UK were brought in at Spanish borders.

    Gareth Bewley, Brittany Ferries customer services manager, said: "Both Spanish and French borders are gradually reopening, but with caveats you must follow.

    "Arrangements for each differ and it is essential you follow them closely or we will be prevented from allowing you to board.

    "Please do not travel to a port if you cannot comply with the strict rules being applied at both French and Spanish borders."

    Covid-19: Portsmouth ferries cancelled as France shuts border

    Under the restrictions those travelling for urgent reasons, including hauliers, French citizens, and British citizens with French residency will be allowed into France, external.

    But in order to travel, they will need to have received a negative test result less than 72 hours before departure.

    The restrictions for both France and Spain are currently in place until at least 6 January.
