Votes are being counted in Wokingham Borough Council's local elections.

A Liberal Democrat-led coalition has run the authority over the past year.

In 2022 the Conservatives lost control of the council for the first time in 20 years.

This year's results are expected to be announced on Friday afternoon.

  4. First results in West Oxfordshirepublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Claire Starr
    BBC Oxford - Political Reporter

The count in West Oxfordshire is well under way and they’re rattling through the results.

The first was a Liberal Democrat gain from the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrat leader of the council has also retained his seat elsewhere.

The Conservatives held a seat in Witney, they say local issues such as 20mph zones and traffic regulation changes to the high street have played a part.

Labour held the Witney Central seat, but by a slim 15 votes to the Tories in second place.

The Conservatives lost control of the council last year, after 22 years in charge, but is, as per the results so far, holding most of the seats it’s defending this time.

The Lib Dem, Labour and Green coalition is looking to strengthen its position by gaining seats again this year.

The victory of the Liberal Democrats in Windsor has been branded as one of the party's best results ever.

Party leader Sir Ed Davey visited the town on Friday morning and told the crowd the results had far exceeded his expectations.

As we've been reporting, 22-year-old Liberal Democrat candidate George Blundell defeated the Conservative leader of the council in Windsor and Maidenhead.

Sir Ed said people voted for the Liberal Democrats "for positive reasons".

But he added: "I’ll be honest with you, they’ve also been voting against the Conservatives.

"I think people now want a general election. They want this government out.”

Responding to the overnight results, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said it was disappointing to lose councillors but added that his party was making progress in "key election battlegrounds".

  20. Leader bemoans national Tory controversiespublished at 07:13 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

National controversies have made local Conservative campaigns "more difficult than I remember", the Havant Borough Council leader has said.

The party retained control of the council but did lose five seats.

Leader Alex Rennie said: "I think we’ve put a strong campaign out there as to why the Conservative message is still the right one for this borough.

"Clearly, the national picture has been difficult this year, more difficult than I can remember in my entire time in politics.

"Sewage was an issue spoken a lot at the doorstep, a lot of concern about the pollution taking place in the harbour.

"I think we’ve got a strong message as Conservatives taking action locally and we’re really pushing the national government to do more on that issue in particular."
