The Liberal Democrats easily held control in Eastleigh, gaining one seat from the Independent group.

Leader Keith House said it was an "absolute firm rejection of the Conservatives".

He said plans for the next four years in the borough would include keeping council tax "down”, protecting services and working with the NHS to improve access for people.

“We also want to make sure green environments are enhanced for everybody," he added.

  3. Leader ousted by 22-year-old Lib Dempublished at 06:25 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

For six solid hours it was as quiet as could be at the Maidenhead leisure centre where the count for the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead is taking place.

And then just as we hit four o’clock in the morning we got the first result...and what a result it turned out to be.

The Conservative leader of the council Andrew Johnson out, knocked off his perch by baby-faced 22-year-old Liberal Democrat candidate George Blundell.

Cue huge cheers from the men and women in yellow, while all around those in blue rosettes seemed to droop in front of your eyes.

It was a huge personal blow for the Tory leader and it’s not been getting any better for his party as Lib Dem after Lib Dem took the applause from their colleagues.

Independents have done well too and as the sun rises over the royal borough it’s clearly been a bad day at the office for the Tories who’ve been in control here since 2007.

Quite how many seats they’ll lose overall remains to be seen.
