    Images of smoke billowing across the Southampton skyline have been flooding social media feeds since the fire started at about 13:00 GMT.

    A fire continues to burn at an industrial unit outside Southampton's stadium.

    Their match against Preston this evening has been postponed.

    Firefighters were called to the scene just a stone's throw from the Championship team's stadium at about 13:00 GMT.

    Flames could still be seen as darkness fell in the city.

    Preston fan Paul disappointed the game has been called off

    Preston fan Paul is among those the BBC spoke to about the match's postponement.

    He said it took him five hours to drive down to the south coast from Lancashire earlier in the day.

    Sitting in a pub in the city centre, he admitted it was "a bit disappointing" but said health and safety had to take precedence over the game.

    He added he was told a coach carrying fans has now broken down on the way back to Preston.

    The Championship football match between Southampton and Preston North End has been postponed.

    Some football fans from Preston have travelled down to Southampton to see their team play.

    Sam is one of them. He is a firefighter from Preston and said he experiences situations like this frequently in his work.

  7. Fire crews expect to be at scene for 'prolonged period'published at 18:40 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March

    The fire service has described the fire as a "significant incident" and says it is likely crews will remain at the scene for a "prolonged period".

    In a statement, the service said: "Over that time, our presence will scale down as the fire is fully extinguished and the smoke plume dissipates.

    "Residents in the area affected by the smoke plume are advised to keep doors and windows closed.

    "Some roads local to the incident are closed and people are advised to avoid the area to allow movements of emergency vehicles."

    Preston North End has thanked supporters who had already travelled hundreds of miles to watch their match against Southampton.

    In a statement, the Lancashire club said: "The EFL will be in discussions with both clubs to determine a suitable date to reschedule the fixture and details for this will be announced in due course.

    "The club would like to thank supporters who have made the long journey to support the team and wish everyone a safe journey home.

    "An announcement will be made on Thursday regarding any potential compensation arrangements for travelling fans."

    "Southampton Football Club regrets to announce that tonight’s Sky Bet Championship match against Preston North End has been postponed.

    "The decision was made after consultation with the local authorities and emergency services after a major fire broke out in a building next to the St Mary’s Stadium site earlier today.

    "The incident has caused significant disruption in the area with road closures around the stadium still in place as fire crews continue to deal with the situation.

    "We are grateful for the cooperation of Preston and the EFL, and while we appreciate the disappointment fans may feel, we hope they will understand the need to put the safety of supporters and staff of both clubs first.

    "The game will be postponed to a new date, which will be announced in due course, and all tickets for tonight’s match will be valid for the rearranged fixture."

    We've just received a statement from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

    It says: “We’ve got more than 100 personnel onsite working extremely hard to tackle a well-developed fire near to St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton.

    “We have been working closely with our partner agencies and Southampton Football Club throughout this incident, with tonight’s scheduled match postponed.

    "We expect to have a presence on the scene overnight and into tomorrow. We ask that the public avoid the area due to a number of road closures in place, and that local residents keep windows and doors closed because of the large smoke plume.”

    People have been urged to avoid the area near St Mary's Stadium as rush hour approaches and the roads get busier.

    More than 100 firefighters remain at the scene and a warehouse building has collapsed in flames.

    Southampton City Council said the following roads have been shut:

    • Melbourne Street
    • Britannia Road

    • Pedestrian access has also been suspended from Northam Road
