  10. Virgin Mary in Evesham: A brief historypublished at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2017

Campaigners fighting a proposed housing development in Evesham are claiming it shouldn't go ahead because a vision of the Virgin Mary was seen on the same site almost 1,300 years ago, by a swineheard.

There's a statue to Eof, or possibly Eoves, in the town's market place - it's the work of sculptor John McKenna, was paid for by local people and unveiled in 2008.

Back in the 8th Century Eof was herding pigs for the Bishop of Worcester, who later became Saint Egwin.

He was looking for some stray pigs in a wooded area by the River Avon when he saw a vision of the Virgin Mary and two attendants.

He told the bishop, who came to the spot and saw the same vision.

As a result, Bishop Egwin founded Evesham Abbey, around which the town grew up.
