  3. Poppy Appeal's urgent call for volunteerspublished at 17:59 British Summer Time 9 August 2017

    The Royal British Legion is appealing for volunteers across the West Midlands to help with the 2017 Poppy Appeal.

    The charity, which sells around 45m poppies across the UK each year, has a particular shortage of help in Coventry, Bedworth, Solihull, Nuneaton and Stratford-upon-Avon.

    Some of the existing volunteers are now too old to support the campaign.

    A man has been jailed for a machete attack, external at a family home in Hall Green.

    James Smith, 32, from Malvern, was sentenced to 12 years after pleading guilty to threatening the family-of-four when he broke in and demanded money before fleeing empty handed.

    He was initially sentenced to eight years at Birmingham Crown Court last Friday, but four years were added as the judge deemed him to be a dangerous offender.

    The trust that runs acute hospitals in Worcestershire says it will take until the "end of September" to review the 22,000 letters that were never sent to GPs in the county following their patients hospital appointments.

    Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust has admitted the letters - which date between 2011 and 2017 - were not processed properly due to a computer error.

    A hunt is under way for two men, external after an armed robbery at Catshill Working Men's Club.

    The incident, which took place on Tuesday night, saw the unknown men enter the premises on Meadow Road reportedly brandishing an axe and a bladed article.

    They demanded money from staff and then left on foot in an unknown direction.

    West Mercia Police are now appealing for information.

    Of a backlog of 22,000 letters that were never sent to GPs, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals says in 11,000 of the cases no action was required.

    That means another 11,000 did require "action" - in many cases follow-up care that may or may not have been provided. At the moment, the hospital simply does not know.

    The trust says it is working to "urgently review the individual cases of these patients and to ensure, where appropriate, patients receive the necessary follow-up care quickly".

    The trust was placed in special measures in December 2015 and the latest inspection by the Care Quality Commission, released yesterday, was highly critical of the organisation.

    A channel has been dug at both ends of the club's home ground to alleviate standing water.

    The birthplace of a world-famous composer from Worcestershire is to reopen in September following a major renovation project.

    It was Sir Edward Elgar's wish that the Lower Broadheath home that he was born in would become a focal point for his music.

    The National Trust took over the lease on the building from the Elgar Foundation in December and have nearly completed a revamp which has seen a new tea room built and exhibition space extended.

  16. Victim of convicted rapist forced to drive around after attackpublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 9 August 2017

    A 77-year-old woman raped by a sex offender just a month after being released from prison was forced to drive around the county for two hours after the attack, a court heard.

    Ashley Shuck, 24, from Worcester, sexually assaulted two women in Kidderminster in June.

    He was jailed for life and will serve a minimum of 10 and a half years.

    Shuck had been released on licence in May after being convicted in 2012 of raping an 18-year-old woman.

    A serious case review will now be carried out and the case has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

    Delivery company Arrow XL says it has a strong future in Worcestershire, despite disruption caused by a devastating fire almost four months ago.

    Arrow XL has opened a new distribution centre in Droitwich Spa as well as promising to rebuild a warehouse in Worcester after the existing building was destroyed by fire in April.

    The two-year project will create up to 50 new jobs once the reconstruction is complete.
