  8. Modern slavery: Thinking outside the boxpublished at 10:30 British Summer Time 18 October 2016

    James Piekos
Reporter, BBC Hull and East Yorkshire

I've been out to a wet and windy Queen's Gardens in Hull this morning to find out about modern day slavery.

What at first looked like a pile of old rubbish on closer inspection were human-sized cardboard boxes and belongings.

    So why are they here?

It's to mark Anti-Slavery Day and to highlight the issue of modern day slavery and the fact that there are thought to be around 13,000 modern day slaves hidden in plain sight in the UK.

The University of Hull's been doing some research which shows most people in the UK don't understand how big a problem it is in this country.

They told us a lack of suitable training for officers may make it unsafe to attend vessel fires at sea, after the end of this year.

Well that situation hasn't changed, so on Friday the Fire Authority will be asked to suspend cover at the end of December.

The deputy chief fire officer Chris Blacksell explains:

"In June this year, the regulations for this section of the cemetery were amended to allow for small gardens on graves. All deed holders were contacted at the time to request that all memorabilia be removed temporarily (before 30 September) to allow works to be undertaken to create the garden spaces, after which, it could be reinstated to the sizes as stated.
