    Police in Hull say they're trying to find a longer-term solution to claims of a recent rise in anti-social behaviour in the city centre linked to drink and drugs.

    Some shop owners have held a meeting with the force as part of ongoing efforts to try and tackle the problem.

    Insp Julian Hart said: "There's not one simple solution and we want to do what we can to support them into accommodation and away from causing the issues that traders are facing in the city centre."

    EU citizens living in Hull have been written to as part of preparations for the UK taking part in the forthcoming European elections.

    The six-month extension to Brexit means the UK must now hold European elections in May, or leave on 1 June with or without a deal.

    Hull City Council has now has written to the 10,700 EU citizens in the city who are registered to vote in the elections in six weeks time.

    They will receive a form which they need to complete if they wish to vote in the UK as part of the constituency of the Yorkshire and Humber Region.

    EU citizens may vote only once, in one member state, and they will need to complete a registration form by Tuesday 7 May if they wish to vote in the UK.

    Graffiti artists who painted more than 20 homes earmarked for demolition have been celebrated by the council for cutting anti-social behaviour in Hull.

    Hull City Council said there had been fewer call-outs for anti-social behaviour in the area where the boarded-up properties are, with the fire service echoing this claim.

    The council's assistant director for neighbourhoods and housing, Dave Richmond, praised the scheme on the Preston Road area of Hull after a two-day event at the weekend.

    He said: "The boarded-up properties created an eyesore. Once the graffiti artists got to work they transformed them into vibrant and colourful community art which local people are proud to have in their area."

    “The artwork was always going to be temporary, yet the ownership that people took in it surpassed expectations," Mr Richmond added.

  8. Hull knife campaigner dedicates award to stabbed brotherpublished at 13:08 British Summer Time 11 April 2019

    A Hull campaigner has been given a top award in recognition of her work fighting knife crime.

    Kayleigh Pepper, from the Rich Foundation, was given an award by the High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire for her work with the No More Knives campaign.

    Writing on Twitter, she paid tribute to her brother Richard who was stabbed on Egton Street in Hull in 2015:

    Hull's Bonus Arena has won a global marketing award beating Ed Sheeran and Amazon to the prize.

    The venue received an award for Campaign of the Year prize at The Ticketing Business Awards in Manchester last night

    The campaign was called Open To All.

    It covered the moving-in period of the venue which included getting local residents to simultaneously flush all of the toilets in the arena as part of the testing process.

  10. Cottingham refugee bike safety scheme startspublished at 10:48 British Summer Time 11 April 2019

    A group of refugees in East Yorkshire who've escaped the Syrian civil war have been given reconditioned bicycles to help them get around and increase their chances of employment.

    A total of 30 refugees have been given the bikes and safety gear at a cycle training day in Cottingham.

    It's hoped the bikes will help the refugees integrate into the community and participants are to be given safe cycling lessons.

    One of the refugees, Muhammed Al Karawit, said it was a "great project".

    "It will help us to go to college and do shopping as well, we are really grateful for this," he said, through an interpreter.

    Mr Al Karawit said his family had escaped from the Syrian city of Daraa via Lebanon to the UK.

    The course will lead to a bike ride around Beverley in June.

    As well as bicycle training and road safety, participants are also to be taught about getting a driving licence, insurance, MOTs and road tax.

    The project was launched last year when 40 refugees were put through the course and has since won an award for sustainable travel.

    The training took place at R-evolution, a Cottingham-based charity.

    Thousands of people are expected to head to Hull's Real Ale and Cider Festival when it opens at the Minster this afternoon.

    The event is in its eighth year and has raised thousands of pounds for Hull Minster over the years.

    The three-day event promises local real ales and ciders, live music and food.

    Officers investigating the incident in February are appealing to football fans, as Wigan visit the KCOM Stadium later today.

    The flyers feature pictures of a man police want to identify who was drinking in the New Griffin pub on Anlaby Road on the night of Friday 8 February.

    Police want to find him in connection with the incident in West Park in the early hours of Saturday 9 February.

    Det Ch Insp Craig Nicholson said: “If you are given a flyer, please don’t discard it as it may help to jog your memory at a later date."

  18. Welsh rock band Stereophonics to play 'intimate' Hull showpublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 10 April 2019

    Welsh rock band Stereophonics are coming to Hull, it has been announced today.

    The group are set to play an "intimate warm up show" at the city's Bonus Arena, ahead of outdoor shows and festival appearances later this year.

    On Twitter, the band said it was "pleased to announce" the gig, on Wednesday 22 May.

    Tickets will go on sale this Friday.

    The police have raided antiques shops in Hull and Beverley.

    Officers searched a business premises on Humber Street in Hull and North Bar Within in Beverley.

    Searches were also carried out at a pair of residential properties on North Bar Without in Beverley.

    Humberside Police say inquiries are ongoing with "no further details" to be released at this time.

  20. New fines introduced in North East Lincolnshirepublished at 16:33 British Summer Time 10 April 2019

    Offences such as abandoning cars and fly-tipping will now carry new fines in North East Lincolnshire.

    North East Lincolnshire Council has approved proposals to introduce more than 20 fixed penalty notices.

    They include repairing a vehicle on the road, graffiting, and fly-posting.

    The authority said the fines are an alternative to prosecution and will help raise £10,000 over the next financial year.
