    A light aircraft pilot who died alongside his passenger when he crashed near Beverley Airfield was not qualified to fly at night, an investigation has found.

    The 76-year-old pilot and his passenger died when his Cessna F172 Skyhawk crashed on farmland near the airport at about 18:30 on 10 October.

    He was flying from Scotland to Beverley in October but was delayed because of technical problems, meaning he would have to land in the dark.

    An investigation by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch found the pilot didn't hold a licence for night flying.

    The report, external also found the pilot was attempting to land after asking a friend to light up the airfield using his car's headlights.

    The number of commercial burglaries in North East Lincolnshire has fallen by 62% following a number of "key arrests and convictions" in the area, say police.

    Humberside Police said six men have been sentenced in connection with a string of break-ins at premises in Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Immingham, including DIY stores, pubs and shops, and three more men have been charged.

    Det Sgt Tom Kelly said: “When you run a business you put your heart and soul into it, as well as your time and money, so when someone breaks in and steals from you or causes damage, it can have a real impact.

    “We know that and that’s why we’re so pleased to have caught so many of those responsible for these kind of offences and put them before the courts."

    A tourism body's board should resign after "damning and breathtaking" reports were published into the running of the company, a peer said.

    The two Welcome to Yorkshire (WtY) reports say expenses claims were made without receipts and staff felt unable to speak out about bad behaviour.

    Lord Paul Scriven said "fundamental change" was needed to regain its reputation.

    A WtY spokesman said: "Where we have let people down, we are truly sorry."

    The company, which receives over £1m in public funding a year, set up the independent investigations after its former boss Sir Gary Verity (pictured) resigned in March.

    Blushing brides could soon be having a very green wedding in a 19th century Grimsby park, but objectors claim the venue is not fit-for-purpose.

    Health and care service provider Navigo has been given permission to turn the North East Lincolnshire Council-owned Floral Hall and Aviary garden centre in People's Park into an events venue and bridal house, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    A spokesman for Navigo, which helps people from disadvantaged backgrounds get back into work, told planning bosses today: “People’s Park is an important community asset and we want to continue to transform this Grimsby gem into an attractive, accessible community centre by regenerating and refurbishing it.”

    Navigo believe the regeneration of the centre would help reduce anti-social behaviour, though objectors were concerned that use of alcohol during events would have the opposite effect.

    They said the building is essentially a greenhouse – meaning it will be warm at all times – and questioned how noise can be limited if windows had to be opened to cool guests down.

    Wildlife experts say there is no need for people to be afraid of bats after a two-year-old Hull boy was reportedly bitten in his cot in an "incredibly rare" incident.

    The Sun newspaper reported that the toddler needed a precautionary rabies vaccination, external after he was bitten by a bat that had found its way into his bedroom.

    But it was today confirmed that the disease has not been found in pipistrelles, the type of bat that is thought to have bitten him.

    The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust suspect the incident involved a young bat that had lost its way and said pipistrelles eat insects and only bite humans if they are handled.

    Louise Wilkinson, conservation policy and campaign manager, said: "The likelihood of being bitten by a bat is minuscule, people do not need to worry that this is going to happen if they've got bats nearby.

    She added that bats are protected by legislation and it is against the law to destroy or damage their roosts.

    The Bat Conservation Trust said numbers had declined in the last century but a combination of legislation and education had helped the partial recovery of some species, including the pipistrelle.

    Public Health England said it recommends a course of rabies vaccine as a "precautionary measure" for anyone who has been bitten by any species of bat.

    Scunthorpe MP Nic Dakin says introducing the biofuel E10 could cut carbon emissions in the UK by as much as taking 700,000 cars off the roads.

    A study by the all-party parliamentary group for British bioethanol looked at the impact of introducing E10 - a fuel blended with 10% ethanol.

    Chairman Mr Dakin says it's a no brainer.

    "We need action on climate change," he said.

    "Introducing E10, as many other countries have done, would immediately take 700,000 cars off the road in terms of emissions, improve our air quality, support our farmers, support the high-tech billion-pound bioethanol industry - it's a no brainer. They just need to get on with it."

    A man has been arrested after a woman with dementia, who was on a trip to Bridlington, was punched in the face while wearing a badge saying "I have Alzheimer's please be patient".

    The 56-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with the incident in a layby near to Bracey Bridge, in which Joy Watson, 61, suffered a broken eye socket.

    Mrs Watson, of Eccles, Salford, claimed a man had attacked her at the side of the A164 on Sunday 7 July, after she told him he was mistreating his dog.

    A man, from Wakefield, has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 GBH and has been released under investigation.

    Patrick Coyle will use a "futuristic local language" to explain how the people of Hull have adapted to new world, in which a polluted Humber Estuary glows a luminescent brown.

    The event, which is free with tickets available online, starts outside the Ferens Art Gallery at 20:30 tomorrow and is part of an ongoing exhibition called Is This Planet Earth?

    A murder investigation has been launched after a man died in hospital more than a week after he was seriously injured in an attack in Hull.

    The 41-year-old man suffered head injuries after being assaulted on Buckingham Street at about 22:30 on 6 July.

    Humberside Police said the man, from Hull, died on Monday afternoon.

    Jason Shreeve, 41, of Barnsley Street, Hull, and Luke Hainsworth, 29, of Edler Avenue, Hull, appeared at Hull Magistrates' Court last week charged with attempted murder and were remanded into custody.

    A woman who was initially charged in connection with the incident has been released with no further action.

    The force has appealed for any members of the public with information about the incident to come forward.

    An East Yorkshire beach is back open today after bomb disposal experts well called on Tuesday to deal with a "suspicious object".

    The corner of South Promenade and Sands Lane, in Hornsea, was cordoned off yesterday after a member of the public found the suspected ordnance and put it on top of a bin.

    A spokesman for the Coastguard said the area is close to a former RAF bombing range and it was possible the item had been washed ashore by the sea.

    The Driffield Show has cancelled its pig section after a case of swine dysentery was confirmed nearby.

    This big marquee will now remain empty with organisers saying the "difficult" decision "has not been taken lightly".

    In a statement on the Driffield Show website organisers said the decision was made consultation with vets after an outbreak of the bacterial disease in a neighbouring area.

    There are also special measures in place after a local case of Equine Flu and documentation confirming vaccinations must be provided before horses are unloaded at the show.

    Last week, pig classes at the Great Yorkshire Show were also cancelled as a "precaution" after one of the animals fell ill at a recent show, although tests later came back negative.
