    David Thompson, 80, from Snargate in Kent, has been fined £7,500 for killing and injuring swans on his land. 

    He was sentenced today for intentionally killing and/or injuring mute swans.

    The farmer was also ordered to pay court costs of £470.

    Mr Thompson was spotted running through a field of rape seed and striking the birds with his shepherd's crook by a coastguard helicopter crew who notified the police. The prosecution was brought by the RSPCA.

    Malcolm Lall, 51, failed to return to Ford Prison on Monday 21 November, after being allowed to leave temporarily the previous Friday. 

    He is serving eight-and-a-half years for grievous bodily harm and robbery offences in Brighton after being convicted in December 2013. 

    He has links to Brighton and surrounding areas, but also has connections in Kent, London, Surrey and Hampshire.

    A motorcyclist has been killed by a car driving the wrong way along a motorway. 

    The man in his 60s was riding on the southbound carriageway of the M20 near junction 9 for Ashford when he was hit by a car driving the other way at about 00:50 GMT today, Kent Police said. 

    The car had joined the coastbound carriageway of the motorway at junction 10 but was heading north towards Maidstone. 

    The motorcyclist died at the scene.

    Kent’s England international Sam Billings has signed for the Sydney Sixers to play in the Big Bash League in Australia next month.

    The 25-year-old will join England colleague Jason Roy, former Kent and Australia fast bowler Doug Bollinger and other current Australia internationals in the Sixers squad.

    The Spitfires’ wicketkeeper/batsman may miss the latter part of the bash if he’s selected for England’s One Day International side to tour India in January.

    The South East is set to benefit from £53m worth of investment for road improvements.

    The money will be used for projects including the repair of almost 90,000 potholes across across Kent, Sussex and Surrey.

    The funding also covers improvements to the most dangerous roads in the area where the risk of fatal or serious collisions are highest.

    A temporary 40mph speed limit on the A20 around Dover has been condemned in Parliament.

    The reduced speed has been enforced since April 2015 between the Roundhill Tunnel and Aycliffe, to help deal with queuing traffic.

    But Highways England says the national speed limit will be re-instated in the New Year. In the Commons, the Dover MP Charlie Elphicke said many motorists want it removed now. 

  13. Motorway reopens after crashpublished at 08:50 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

    The M20 has reopened coastbound at junction 9 for the A20 at Ashford.

    The road was closed after a crash at just before 01:00 GMT.  

    Kent Highways said there are still delays at the junction while traffic clears.

    Kent Police is appealing for help in finding a 30-year-old Canterbury man who has been reported missing.

    Wayne Stirrups was in Cardiff on Thursday 17 November but was thought to be making his way back to Kent.

    He was last seen in the Trafalgar Square area of London on Saturday 26 November.

    Inspector Gordon Etheridge said: "Wayne’s friends and family are understandably concerned about his welfare and we urge him or anyone who may have seen him to contact us."

    Anyone with information should call Kent Police on 101 quoting reference 18-1174.

    56-year-old Tom Griffin is being treated for nine tumours after being diagnosed with an endocrine tumour two years ago.

    The Medway NHS Foundation Trust is hoping that an inspection which begins today will mean that they finally come out of special measures after more than three years.

    The Care Quality Commission inspection at Medway Maritime Hospital today and tomorrow will be looking at the quality of services including safety.

    The trust says that among improvements, its death rates are now back to the national average.

    A Kent trader says he's "flabbergasted" after being issued with £200 fine for not having a 'no smoking' sign in his van - despite the fact he doesn't smoke. 

  19. Motorway closed after crashpublished at 07:27 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

    The M20 remains closed coastbound at junction 9 - the A20 for Ashford. 

    Officers were called to a crash close to the junction at 00:55 GMT. 

    Traffic is being routed off at the junction and then back on again via the roundabout.

  20. Scam victims lose £600,000published at 07:16 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

    More than £600,000 has been lost by people in Kent who have fallen victim to scams.

    In the past two years a scheme called Stop the Scammers has referred more than 2,000 victims to Kent Trading Standards.

    Now 200 people are being trained up by Kent County Council to help protect vulnerable people from becoming victims of scams.
