Read MoreThieves have stolen 60m (200ft) of railway track from a model engineering society in Sturry.
The whole of the 220m (720ft) track had been dismantled, and the rest of it stacked up, leading police to think the gang planned to return for it.
It happened at the society's base in Fordwich Road, between 13:00 GMT on 2 February and 09:30 GMT on 5 February.
Police say a vehicle would have been needed to transport the stolen track.
Quote MessageBy dismantling the whole track the thieves have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage. By comparison the metal they stole is worth a few pounds. It was a senseless theft which will have a big impact, not only on the members of the society who will have to replace it, but also on the many members of the public who used to enjoy train rides at the site.'

Parliament will debate new measures to control seagull populations later today.
Tell us what you think - you can get in touch on Twitter, external, on Facebook, external or by sending us an email.
Lucy has been in touch and says we are lucky to have a healthy population.
Seagulls are part of living by the sea. Herring gulls are globally in decline like the vast majority of species that human beings are managing to annihilate at alarming speed. We should consider ourselves lucky to have a healthy population in Brighton and we should stop being so utterly selfish when a species manages to do well by considering them an inconvenience or vermin.

A man from Kent who carried out DIY and gardening while naked was not 'flaunting his nakedness', according to his defence.
Robert Jenner from Eccles near Maidstone is facing 11 public-order charges at Maidstone Magistrates' Court, accused of causing alarm and distress to people who saw him.
Alex Davey, defending, said: "It is not illegal per se to be naked in public. Naturism is perfectly lawful and is considered a freedom of expression."
She added that just because some people might feel surprised or uncomfortable, that did not make Mr Jenner's behaviour disorderly, and didn't make it a crime.
The prosecution said this was repeated behaviour over a period of time, and witnesses were harassed, alarmed or distressed.
The case continues.

Former Kent and England captain Chris Cowdrey believes Joe Root isn't ready to take on the England Test captaincy.
The 26-year-old has been widely backed to succeed Alastair Cook.
Quote MessageVery surprised to be honest. Joe Root being the obvious candidate to most people to follow on. He's not ready for it, and I expected them to talk Alastair Cook into just staying for another year or two maybe, and let Joe Root grow more into the side, and into cricket."
