Southern said the RMT had already inflicted 28 days of strikes - and it accused the union of trying to hang onto its power to cancel trains.

But the union's Assistant General Secretary, Steve Hedley, says Southern has a "pig-headed attitude" against a second safety-critical member of staff.

Gillingham started strongly at Priestfield as Jay Emmanuel-Thomas had a shot cleared off the line, while Rory Donnelly hit the post and then headed wide as the hosts largely bossed the first period.

Gills took the lead when Max Ehmer headed home from a long throw.

But they couldn't hold on to all three points, as Chesterfield's Tom Anderson popped up to score from close range.

Gills are 17th in League One after five draws in a row.

  3. Afghan interpreter Javed Hotak 'let down' by UK governmentpublished at 08:06 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2017

An Afghan who says he was an interpreter with British forces says the government has committed a great injustice by not granting him asylum.

Javed Hotak said he was sent death threats by the Taliban and feared for his life if the Home Office sent him back to Afghanistan.

He has been living illegally in Birmingham while he makes a third claim to stay.

The Home Office said all asylum cases were considered on individual merits.

Mr Hotak's first claim for asylum was rejected by the Home Office in 2011 after he arrived in the UK - via the Jungle in Calais - in a lorry two years earlier.

South East MEP Anneliese Dodds has called for an investigation into "anti-competitive practices" in Formula 1.

The Labour MEP claims smaller teams are being "unfairly punished" by the way F1 is run.

It comes after the recent collapse of the Formula 1 Manor team as an example of how the sport is failing some teams.

Dodd has also previously expressed concerns over the sport's takeover by Liberty Media and its UK tax arrangements.

In 2015, two of F1's smaller teams, Force India and Sauber, asked the EU's Competition Commission to investigate the sport due to perceived unfairness over the way revenues were divided and rules decided.
