  7. 'Deception' claims over Labour cosmetics salepublished at 18:39 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2017

    Helen Catt
    Political editor, BBC South East

A woman claims people were “misled” into thinking the sale of cosmetics, which funded a Labour councillor’s election campaign, were for charity.

Karen Constantine - who is vying for a Ramsgate seat in Kent County Council - sold a selection of Lush products for £415.

The items were donated by Lush to The Kindness Offensive charity on the condition they should not be resold.

Some were shared with the charity Food for All, but these were passed on to the Ramsgate Labour Party and sold in a pub drive.

Ms Constantine’s Facebook page had made clear the money was destined for Labour coffers, but Natalie Garrett was working at the pub during the sale and said a board at the sale indicated the money would be going to charity.

A former charity volunteer herself, she said she feels misled and added: "I asked her what she wanted written on the board and the word charity was clearly, absolutely there.

"Some of my friends and even some of my family purchased some of the goodie bags, a couple of items. Again they feel the same, if they'd have known that it was for a political party, it just wouldn't have been supported.”

Ms Constantine previously apologised for “not knowing the election funding laws regarding charities” and gave the money to local good causes, but declined to comment on the fresh claims.
