  8. Southern rail chief's pay hits £495,000 after strike-hit year published at 09:11 British Summer Time 10 April 2017

    Charles Horton

The chief of the Southern rail network was paid £495,000 during a year in which the service was hit by strikes and falling profits.

Charles Horton, chief executive of Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), was paid £478,000 in pay in the last financial year, while also earning £17,000 from Southern Railway Limited, the groups' accounts showed.

It comes during a prolonged battle between Southern and the unions over so-called driver-only operated trains, which has led to disruption for millions of passengers.

Its parent company also suffered a profit slump of more than £15 million in the last year, latest figures showed.

GTR runs Southern, as well as Thameslink, Great Northern and the Gatwick Express routes.

GTR's accounts showed Mr Horton, as the group's highest-paid director, was previously paid £493,000 in 2015.

A spokesman for the group said: "As a matter of policy we do not discuss the remuneration of any of our employees."

Board game creators have dubbed Royal Tunbridge Wells "too posh" to have an equivalent of Old Kent Road in the town’s brand new Monopoly board.

It beat other "royal" cities and towns across the UK to have an official game made to mark the Queen's 65th year on the throne.

More than 2,000 suggestions for places on the board have been sent in, but very few for the modest end of town, and none to take the place of Old Kent Road.

Poll lines have now re-opened for one week to get some ideas.
