    Homes have been evacuated as firefighters battle a large fire in a residential area in Northfleet.

    Plumes of black smoke can be seen rising from what is believed to be a derelict leisure centre in Nelson Road.

    A ship excavation is expected to reveal a "treasure trove" of items and stories from Europe's global trading history.

    An international team of maritime archaeologists are diving, excavating and recording the wreck of Dutch ship the Rooswijk off the Kent coast.

    All 300 shipmen died when the vessel, carrying coins and silver ingots, sank on Goodwin Sands in January 1740.

    Never before have any of the Dutch East India Company's 250 wrecks been scientifically excavated on this scale.

    Historic England is working with the Dutch government to discover more about the vessel as part of its #Rooswijk1740 project.

  12. 'Foolish' level crossing-hopping learner driver convictedpublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 22 August 2017

    A learner driver has been banned from driving - before she even got her licence - after crashing through a level crossing barrier.

    Adenike Akingbogun, 44, of Monarch Drive, Sittingbourne, Kent, drove on to the crossing in Purfleet in Essex on Christmas Eve when the warning lights were flashing.

    As the barriers came down behind and in front of her car she made the decision to reverse - crashing through the barrier and ramming the vehicle behind her.

    British Transport Police said Akingbogun, who was with a qualified driver at the time, caused £1,100 of damage to the barrier. It was a "rather foolish manoeuvre", it said.

    She was convicted of driving a motor vehicle dangerously, fined £420 plus costs and was disqualified from driving for 12 months.

    A man has died at a campsite in Tunbridge Wells.

    Kent Police say they were called by South East Coast Ambulance Service at 06:14 BST today to a medical incident at the site in Powder Mill Lane.

    Patrols and ambulance crews went to the scene where a man was pronounced dead.

    The death is being treated as unexplained.

    A woman who was unconscious received medical treatment and was taken to a local hospital by air ambulance.

    Flamefest, which boasts a "discreet" adult play area and an outdoor dungeon, was held at the site over the weekend.
