Ten small businesses are in line for a windfall after applying to Mid Sussex District Council's Microbusiness Grant Scheme.

The scheme is open to firms with fewer than 10 employees, and is funded through a £72,000 allocation from the West Sussex County Council's business rates pool.

More than £50,000 has already been allocated by the district's cabinet grants panel, which will meet on Monday 3 September to consider the latest batch, totalling £17,150.

They include £2,000 for Slake Café Ltd, a luxury coffee shop, which is due to start trading next month in High Street, Lindfield.

A Green Goddess, of Hurstpierpoint, which manufactures environmentally friendly cleaning products, has asked for £2,000 to develop a new range.

The 2018/19 Microbusiness grant scheme has attracted 41 applications.

Two of them were turned down earlier this month, leaving £4,385 in the pot.

A report to the panel stated that officers were contacting businesses who applied after the closing date to invite them to bid for the remaining funds.

When amateur astronomer Phil Robson died his family wanted to give him a fitting send-off.

They used a weather balloon to carry his ashes to the edge of the atmosphere and scatter them in orbit.

But the parachute which should have brought the video of the event back to earth didn't open, and now the search is on for the box containing the camera.

A Sussex shopkeeper said he has been left frightened and vulnerable after police failed to respond to three 999 calls as his shop was being ransacked by youths.

Tamo Sutharsson said his shop in Crowborough has been repeatedly targeted by teenagers.

But in the latest incident the police took until Tuesday to respond and told him that Friday nights are very busy.

Sussex Police said there is an active investigation into Friday's incident, they are aware of "community concerns" and have prioritised patrols in the area.

They added there had been an overall decrease in reports of crime and antisocial behaviour.

Land in Gillingham earmarked to be used as future burial plots is set to become the home of a new school in a bid to meet demand in the Medway Towns.

Medway Council cabinet members are likely to support the plan for the site on Cornwallis Avenue, which is currently reserved for the expansion of the neighbouring Woodlands Cemetery, next Tuesday 4 September.

The authority says only 55% of the 3.35 hectare site is needed to provide sufficient burial plots for the next 100 years, while "pressure" continues to grow on educational provision.

A report by Paul Clarke, programme lead for school organisation and capital services, reads: "Local and national attitudes towards burial are almost certain to change over the next 100 years.

"Options for 'lift and deepen', increasing ground levels, reusing grave space, and an increasing reliance upon cremation will serve to mitigate against the local authority running out of capacity across its cemetery portfolio.

"In contrast, demand for school places in Medway is rising across all sectors of the education system.

"Having the remaining 1.5 hectares of the Cornwallis Avenue land available for education use will facilitate meeting these pressures and the local authority's duties in respect of school sufficiency."

The population of Medway is predicted to increase from 278,000 to 317,500 by 2035.

Seven thousand roof tiles have been reported stolen from a property near Chartham in Kent.

It is the third theft of its kind in the Canterbury area, Kent Police said.

The tiles, plus scaffold fittings and a wheelbarrow, were taken from the property in Garlinge Green between 16 and 25 August.

This follows the theft of 200 roof tiles from a crate at Canterbury Christchurch University in North Holmes Road, Canterbury, on 4 August.

A further theft of around 100 slate tiles took place from a building under renovation in Shalmsford Street, Chartham, on 10 August.

Although officers are not currently linking the incidents, they are asking people to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

Anyone with information about the theft in Garlinge Green is asked to phone Kent Police.
