  2. MPs' security is taken 'very seriously' - Parliamentary watchdogpublished at 14:53 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

In the aftermath of the killing of Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox, the parliamentary expenses watchdog says it takes the security of MPs "very seriously" at home and in their constituencies.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority, external (IPSA) wrote to all MPs in January outlining new arrangements for funding the cost of security measures, saying "recent events have led us, with the police and the House of Commons, to take stock of our arrangements to ensure that they are appropriate to changed circumstances".

IPSA directs MPs to complete a safety checklist and have their office assessed by an "approved security assessor" - and spending on security measures, including for lone working, is approved on the basis of that assessment.

IPSA takes the security of MPs very seriously. We wrote to all members of Parliament earlier this year to inform them of the security support available. This includes security at their home and at constituency offices."

  19. 'It was instantly clear she was someone who'd make her mark in politics'published at 13:23 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

    Joe Inwood
    BBC Video Journalist

It is almost a year to the day since I first met Jo Cox MP.

I was filming a feature about her first day in Parliament. She was fiercely intelligent, impassioned and articulate - all the things successful politicians need to be.

But she was also warm, engaging, and human - all the things they so often want to be.

We walked into the bowels of her barge, where her husband Brendan was preparing breakfast. She offered me a coffee and we started chatting. Her two kids joined us. They were charming, lively and bright. It wasn't hard to see where they got it from.

We talked about politics, family, travel. After about half an hour I had to remind myself I was actually there to film her. It was impossible to meet Jo and not want to spend time with her.

I spent a couple of days filming with Jo and, luckily, she liked the piece. The last time we spoke was a couple of months ago.

It’s hard to believe that will now never happen. Politics, public life but, most importantly, her wonderful family are far poorer for her senseless death.
