    We're coming to you live from Birstall on BBC Radio Leeds this morning.

    We're paying tribute to one of our own. Jo Cox, the MP for Batley and Spen died right here yesterday after being shot. 

    She was attacked outside the library in the village of Birstall in her constituency where she'd been holding her regular surgery.

  4. Community comes together to mourn MPpublished at 07:15 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

    Last night, hundreds of people packed into a church for an emotional vigil for Batley and Spen Labour MP Jo Cox after she was shot and killed in an attack in her constituency. 

    Local residents were joined by MPs for a service at St Peter's Church in Birstall.

    Church bells rang 42 times for the mother-of-two, who would have celebrated her birthday next week.

    The Rt Revd Nick Baines, the Bishop of Leeds, said the MP had "lit a candle to dispel the darkness".

    • Mrs Cox was 41 and was married with two children
    • She was shot and stabbed in Birstall yesterday and was left bleeding on the ground 
    • A 52-year-old man was arrested nearby

    Both sides of the EU referendum campaigns quickly suspended their canvassing after the attack.  

    In the hours after the attack, her husband, Brendan, simply tweeted a picture of Jo near their narrow boat.

    Then, just after 17:00, at a West Yorkshire Police press briefing, Temporary Chief Constable Dee Williams announced that Mrs Cox had died.
